RuneScape, one of the longest-running online games, is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.Jagex, the pioneering company behind this MMORPG, is making headlines with what they describe as their “largest ever investment”aimed at revitalizing the franchise. This ambitious initiative includes rebranding to Jagex: The RuneScape Company, a commitment to expand content offerings, and the development of new expansions, such as RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Additionally, a fresh roadmap for Old School RuneScape has been outlined to chart the future of these storied titles.

Exciting Events and Community Celebrations

To usher in the celebrations, Jagex revealed a new promotional video that showcases their exciting plans, including the much-anticipated return of RuneFest. This year’s event promises to be the largest to date, accommodating double the usual attendees, thus enhancing community engagement and participation. The video also offers nostalgic highlights, reflecting on RuneScape’s remarkable journey over the past 25 years.

“It’s incredible to think a quarter century has passed since RuneScape’s beginnings as a Java-based browser game, ”stated Jon Bellamy, CEO of Jagex, in a press release. He emphasized that this achievement belongs not just to the company, but also to the vibrant community that has grown around the game.

Future Directions and Player Engagement

Bellamy outlined that the upcoming phase—dubbed RS25—marks not only a reflection on the past but a decisive step forward.“We’re investing in our games, the player experience, our technology, and our teams, ” he said, underscoring the need for ongoing development to keep RuneScape relevant and inspiring for millions of players.

While specifics regarding the future in-game content remain scarce, Jagex has set dates for revealing more details. Players can expect the new roadmap for Old School RuneScape to be unveiled during the Old School RuneScape Winter Summit on January 25, 2026. Furthermore, the roadmap for RuneScape: Dragonwilds will be highlighted in a summit on January 29, 2026. Leading up to these events, a special RS Ahead live stream will occur on January 19, 2026, providing an overarching update on the franchise’s next chapter.

Community-Centric Innovations

The updates are expected to bring a “comprehensive rejuvenation, ”focusing on integrity, visual enhancements, and an increased emphasis on the core elements that make RuneScape special. Noteworthy planned features include a revitalized Player Avatar and substantial improvements in player support services, aiming to better serve the dedicated community.

Importantly, one of the most significant upcoming changes will be the elimination of the Treasure Hunter microtransactions system, a decision made in response to community feedback in November 2025.

In conjunction with these game-related updates, Jagex announced the launch of the Future Talent Pathway, created in partnership with Into Games. This mentorship program is focused on supporting the next generation of game developers, particularly those from low-income and working-class backgrounds, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities necessary to embark on careers in the gaming industry.
