SEGA Sells Relic Entertainment, Cuts Another 240 Jobs in Europe

Today, SEGA has revealed that it will be divesting Relic Entertainment as part of a larger restructuring effort primarily focused on the European market.

The well-known Vancouver-based studio, recognized for its strategy games such as Homeworld, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, and Age of Empires IV, has been acquired by the external investor Emona Capital LLP for an undisclosed amount. However, fans can rest assured as Relic itself announced that it will continue to operate as an independent studio, just as it did during its first seven years before being acquired by THQ and SEGA. As indicated in the title, SEGA is currently reducing its workforce by approximately 240 positions at Creative Assembly, SEGA Europe, and Hardlight. The latter studio is most recognized for their role as the main developer for the 3D platform game Sonic Dream Team, which was launched in December on Apple Arcade.

Despite not being the first time, Creative Assembly has faced layoffs. Previously, in September, SEGA terminated their Hyenas sci-fi first-person shooter game, resulting in an unspecified number of job cuts at the UK based studio. Nevertheless, in a statement released to IGN, the publisher assured that Creative Assembly is still actively developing multiple projects for both Total War and other future endeavors.

Creative Assembly is currently working on multiple projects, including both Total War and an undisclosed project.

Despite it being only March, the recent round of layoffs brings the year 2024 closer than ever to breaking the record for the highest number of job cuts. Additionally, even the largest corporation in the world (Microsoft) is considering significant changes to improve its long-term profitability.
