Emphasizing Practical Effects in Marvel’s Thunderbolts

Actor Sebastian Stan, known for his portrayal of Bucky Barnes, recently highlighted the pivotal role of practical effects in the highly anticipated Marvel film, Thunderbolts. This Phase 5 film introduces a new ensemble of characters, combining skilled assassins and formidable super soldiers. While the MCU’s version of the Thunderbolts may not possess the extraordinary powers of their comic-book counterparts, such as Atlas and Moonstone, they form a treacherous black-ops team led by the unpredictable Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

A Shift from CGI to Practical Effects

Thunderbolts is set to deliver an intense action experience, yet it aims to distinguish itself from other MCU titles that often rely heavily on visual effects (VFX) and CGI. As Stan discussed in an interview with Deadline, the film has made a conscious effort to incorporate practical effects. He explained, “there were many things in the movie that were actually done practically,” emphasizing the noticeable difference that such techniques make in storytelling. Stan believes that audiences are adept at discerning the authenticity in practical effects, stating, “people are just smart. I think audiences just, they know.”

Stan’s Perspective on the Film’s Unique Chemistry

Reflecting on the production experience, Stan shared his excitement about working alongside a talented cast that includes David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. He described the feel of the film as akin to the classic 1985 movie, The Breakfast Club, highlighting its humor and relatability. He stated:

“I don’t feel you can compare it to any previous Marvel movie, and that’s because of the group of characters in this film and these actors. I couldn’t have had a better time than I did with David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I mean, every single one of these people are funny, they’re generous, and so I think a lot of that chemistry did make it into the movie, and I’m excited for people to see that. It’s a little bit like The Breakfast Club. It has its own vibe, and it’s funny, and it’s real, and we did actual real stunts, like when you’re watching a truck blow up, it’s a truck blown up. It’s not CGI. Marvel really wanted this to have its own- there were many things in the movie that were actually done practically, and I think that does go a long way, because people are just smart. I think audiences just, they know.
