Samsung is considering the implementation of a silicon-carbon (Si/C) battery for its upcoming flagship smartphones, including the highly anticipated Galaxy S27 Ultra. However, the South Korean tech giant seems to be exercising caution, opting against extravagant battery capacities like 10, 000mAh for its Galaxy S27 lineup.

This decision may be disappointing to some consumers, especially as many Chinese smartphones now offer battery capacities exceeding 6, 000mAh. Nevertheless, we argue that the rumored 5, 800mAh battery for the Galaxy S27 Ultra will be sufficiently robust, owing to two key advancements in technology.

Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra: Efficiency Boost from M16 OLED and Exynos 2700 Architecture

Recently, tipster Schrödinger revealed insights suggesting that “multiple sources indicate a Silicon-Carbon smartphone is under active development, with the Galaxy S27 Ultra being the most likely candidate for its introduction.”

Silicon-carbon batteries represent a significant shift from traditional lithium-ion batteries. Instead of the standard graphite used for the anode, these batteries utilize a fracture-resistant, nanostructured silicon-carbon composite. This innovative material has the potential to store up to ten times as many lithium ions, thereby vastly enhancing battery capacity while maintaining a slim profile. However, it is important to note that silicon-carbon batteries tend to have a shorter lifespan compared to their lithium-ion counterparts.

According to Schrödinger, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to feature a 5, 800mAh battery. Samsung has been exploring various configurations of silicon-carbon batteries, including an impressive 12, 000mAh model, which combines a 6, 800mAh cell (at 4.7mm thickness) with a 5, 200mAh cell (at 3.2mm thickness).It remains unclear whether the 5, 800mAh capacity referenced by Schrödinger involves an existing silicon-carbon battery configuration being tested at Samsung SDI, or if it will utilize current polymer lithium-ion technology.

Regardless, a 5, 800mAh battery is anticipated to deliver exceptional performance, thanks in part to two major innovations. First, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is rumored to incorporate M16 OLED panels, which replace the traditional blue fluorescent OLED materials with more efficient blue phosphorescent materials, leading to significant improvements in energy efficiency.

Second, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra is exclusively powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the S27 Ultra will utilize a combination of the Exynos 2700 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6/Pro processors. This is particularly exciting, as the revamped architecture of the Exynos 2700 features an integration of RAM alongside the SoC at the wafer level, resulting in substantial efficiency gains due to reduced interconnects. Furthermore, the upgraded HPB heat sink now sits atop both the RAM and the SoC, enhancing thermal stability.

When combined, the advancements of the M16 OLED panel with the Exynos 2700 chip, in addition to the 16% increase in rated battery capacity, suggest that the Galaxy S27 Ultra will excel in longevity, proving to be highly effective even without resorting to battery capacities exceeding 6, 000mAh with silicon-carbon technology.
