The upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge is set to break away from Samsung’s conventional design philosophy for its flagship devices. This stylish smartphone is expected to be a focal point of conversation for anyone fortunate enough to get their hands on it. Interestingly, Samsung initially had a more traditional design approach in mind, as reports indicate that the company was testing two different prototypes for the Galaxy S25 Edge before settling on a remarkably slender version. While this design choice showcases an impressive thinness, it has resulted in certain compromises, particularly regarding the camera setup, which we will explore further.

Design Choices: A Thinner Profile Versus Enhanced Features

The prototype version selected for launch boasts a thickness of just 5.84mm, as reported by Smart Prix. In comparison, the alternate prototype featured a thickness of 6.4mm, which would have allowed for the inclusion of additional components, such as a third rear camera. Ultimately, the chosen model will likely offer only two rear cameras: one equipped with the same high-resolution 200MP sensor found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

This decision appears to stem from Samsung’s belief that consumers prioritize an ultra-thin design over additional camera features. Prior to the introduction at Galaxy Unpacked, the Galaxy S25 Edge was listed on Geekbench 6, showing an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. However, the benchmarks did not showcase the processor’s full potential, as the multi-core scores were noticeably lower compared to other models in the Galaxy S25 series.

These design choices come with their drawbacks. The extremely slim chassis of the Galaxy S25 Edge limits the incorporation of vital cooling solutions like a robust vapor chamber, potentially hindering the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s performance compared to its counterparts. Additionally, this focus on a slim profile means a reduced battery capacity; the device will reportedly feature a modest 3, 900mAh battery with support for charging speeds of up to 25W, as indicated by a 3C certification.

Nevertheless, it seems Samsung has a distinctive strategy for the Galaxy S25 Edge. With its anticipated launch scheduled for April, the industry awaits to see how this thinner competitor stacks up against the likes of the iPhone 17 Air in real-world usage.
