SAG-AFTRA Negotiates Tentative Agreement With Video Game Companies, Potential End to Voice Actors’ Strike Ahead

SAG-AFTRA Reaches Tentative Agreement with Video Game Employers

The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has made significant strides by announcing a tentative agreement with video game companies concerning the Interactive Media contract. This development holds the potential to conclude the lengthy strike being waged by voice actors.

Background of the Strike

Since July 2024, performers engaged under the Interactive Media Agreement (IMA) have been on strike, primarily due to concerns over the misuse of generative AI technologies. The actors aimed to secure protections against the unauthorized and perpetual use of their voices, which could be replicated without additional compensation or consent for future projects.

Key Achievements of the Tentative Deal

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national chief executive director and chief negotiator, expressed optimism regarding the deal, highlighting that it introduces essential regulations around AI that will safeguard performers’ livelihoods in an increasingly tech-driven landscape.“This agreement establishes necessary AI guardrails that defend performers’ livelihoods in the AI age, alongside other important gains, ”he noted.

Support from Leadership

Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA, commended the determination and bravery exhibited by the video game performers against major industry players in one of the most profitable sectors. She praised the efforts of the negotiating committee, stating, “Their incredible courage and persistence have secured a deal that moves the needle forward. We are much better off than before.”Once the agreement is ratified, the organization will focus on preparations for future negotiations, emphasizing that each contract is a step in an ongoing process.

Next Steps

The strike will come to an end once the details of the agreement are finalized, an announcement expected to occur in the near future. Until that time, performers under the IMA will continue their strike action.
