“Regrettable” – Paula Badosa claps back at remark on her ranking decline as she risks leaving top 100 after Charleston Open loss amid injury woes

Despite a Spanish news publication’s social media post about her potential drop from the Top 100, Paula Badosa remained unfazed and stood her ground.

Despite her persistent lower back injuries since last season, Badosa has been determined to continue competing. However, these injuries forced her to withdraw from both the Dubai Tennis Championships and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells this year. In her most recent tournament, the Charleston Open, she unfortunately suffered an early defeat in the opening round against 2024 Miami Open champion Danielle Collins.

Deportes Cuatro, a Spanish media outlet, posted on X about Badosa’s defeat at the Charleston Open and the resulting loss of points, raising the possibility of her dropping out of the Top 100. They shared an article from El Desmarque, another Spanish publication, which reported:

“Paula Badosa does not raise her head: she falls decisively in Charleston and flirts with leaving the ‘top 100’,”the outlet wrote (translated from Spanish).

Despite being faced with criticism, Badosa was quick to remind the publication of the challenging road to recovery that forced her to be out of action for 10 months and the inevitable drop in rankings that accompanied it.

“It seems too much to me to still be in the top 100 without competing for 10 months. And finally, please put a photo of me on the cover… Regrettable,”Badosa replied.

Despite facing a series of lower back and adductor injuries, Paula Badosa is determined to make a comeback. As a previous semi-finalist and quarterfinalist at the Charleston Open, Badosa faced challenges at this year’s event.

The Spaniard was eliminated in the first round of the event as her opponent Danielle Collins dominated the match with impressive play. Collins served 8 aces and ultimately won the match 6-1, 6-4.

Despite her time off-court in the South Carolina city, Badosa managed to make the most of it. She shared pictures on Instagram featuring her sister Jana Badosa and coach Pol Toledo Bague, showcasing their time together.

“And in spite of it all… I’ll keep this,”Badosa captioned the pictures.
