Understanding Pestilence Outbreaks in No Rest for the Wicked

After completing the main campaign, players will encounter regions shrouded in a sinister, purple mist. This indicates an ongoing Pestilence Outbreak within these zones. Here, enemies become more frequent and formidable, but they reward you with superior loot, including unique materials related to the outbreak.

Defeating enemies in these areas helps lower the Pestilence Outbreak meter displayed at the bottom of the screen. Once you have vanquished a sufficient number of foes, a special boss related to the outbreak will appear, identifiable on the map by a skull icon.Defeating this boss will conclude the outbreak and provide additional rewards, such as rare weapons and armor. While being at max level is advantageous, it isn’t strictly necessary for engagement in these encounters.

Timing of Pestilence Outbreaks

Pestilence Outbreaks randomly manifest in various zones approximately every 24 hours following the previous outbreak. Players can also initiate an outbreak by burning a Torn Effigy at a campfire and end one in the same manner.

Adjusting World Difficulty Level

During Pestilence Outbreaks, players gain the opportunity to elevate the world difficulty level. This option is exclusive to the Pestilence zones.

To raise the difficulty in these areas, navigate to any campfire and select the Burn option. You can choose to sacrifice any inventory item, and increasing the Corruption level yields better rewards upon clearing the Pestilence. Each level introduces new enemy modifiers, enhancing the challenge significantly. Potential modifiers include:

  • Enemies regenerate health
  • Players’ Focus decreases when hit
  • Enemies exhibit faster attack speeds
  • High-health enemies receive reduced damage

If you find it difficult to tackle outbreaks, consider respeccing your character to experiment with different builds.

Rewards from Pestilence Outbreaks

Enemies in Pestilence Outbreak zones possess a higher likelihood of dropping equipment compared to those found in non-Pestilence areas. If you’re on the hunt for rare weapons or armor that you have yet to unlock through crafting, these zones provide an ideal setting for exploration.

Moreover, Pestilence-related monsters drop upgrade materials essential for Exaltation.

Exaltation serves as a unique upgrade mechanic that enhances the stats of your gear. Currently, this feature is available exclusively to players who have completed the campaign and reached the Pestilence Outbreak phase.

To exalt an item, it must meet specific criteria, including:

  • The item should be fully upgraded.
  • All gem slots or enchantment slots must be occupied.

When you exalt an item, one of its attributes is randomly increased by 50%.Each time you perform an exaltation, there’s a chance to enhance the same attribute multiple times.

Materials required for Exaltation, which can be obtained from monsters in Pestilence zones, include:

  • Thorn Remember
  • Torn Marrow
  • Torn Sinew

A complete set of Exalted gear significantly boosts your power, transforming even standard builds into formidable setups. However, the path to acquire such gear is fraught with challenging variants of enemies and bosses lurking in outbreak zones.

Exploring The Crucible

The Crucible mode, while accessible earlier in the game, is ideally suited as an endgame activity where you can truly test the limits of your character builds.

This roguelike mode immerses players in ten combat arenas. To succeed, you must eliminate all enemies in each arena and confront a challenging boss at the end. A single misstep can lead to failure, making skill and strategy paramount.

As with typical roguelike experiences, players receive temporary power-ups throughout their Crucible runs. These boosts can enhance your base stats or grant unique effects, such as causing enemies to explode upon death or calling down lightning strikes on opponents when you land a hit.

Reward Mechanisms in The Crucible

While the Crucible may not yield as much XP or loot as other game areas, you are guaranteed to receive three chests of loot each time you reach the sixth floor. Additionally, defeating the end-boss can reward you with unique weapons. The Crucible is an excellent option for players on the lookout for specific weapons or new gameplay experiences.

Interaction with The Seneschal

Upon reaching the sixth floor of the Crucible, players will encounter the Seneschal, a large, non-hostile creature offering several beneficial services.

By providing Gloamseeds—obtained by clearing floors in the Crucible—you can unlock further services from the Seneschal. Their advantages extend beyond mere perks during Crucible engagements; one crucial upgrade allows them to function as a vendor, while another enables gear repairs. The assistance of the Seneschal can prove invaluable during your run.
