Koei Tecmo Reveals Exciting Nioh 3 Gameplay Footage

This morning, Koei Tecmo dropped a captivating 17.5-minute gameplay showcase for the highly anticipated Nioh 3. As noted in our earlier roundup article, this installment immerses players in several historical eras, including the Heian, Sengoku, Edo, and Bakumatsu periods.

Exploration Through Time

The latest gameplay showcase opens during the Sengoku, or Warring States period. Here, players traverse a vast and dynamic open field, all while navigating the path toward the legendary Crucible.

Combat Mechanics: Flexibility and Strategy

The protagonist, the historical figure Tokugawa Takechiyo (Iemitsu), possesses a unique ability to seamlessly shift between traditional samurai fighting techniques and a newly introduced ninja style. This dual combat system enhances gameplay flexibility, allowing players to adapt their strategy according to varying enemies and combat situations or to simply favor their own preferred playstyle.

In Samurai mode, Tokugawa bravely tackles foes head-on, employing martial arts mastery to deflect incoming attacks while dynamically switching stances to unleash a diverse arsenal of strikes. Alternatively, the Ninja style emphasizes stealth and agility, allowing Tokugawa to engage in high-speed maneuvers, including mid-air assaults and back attacks, to outwit opponents.

Friendly Encounters Amidst Hostility

Interestingly, not all encounters in Nioh 3 are designed to challenge the player. Team Ninja’s developers have confirmed the presence of friendly characters and even benevolent Yōkai throughout Tokugawa’s journey. Engaging with these entities may yield valuable rewards beneficial for progression. However, the quest ultimately leads to the Crucible, a perilous realm dominated by formidable and hostile Yōkai, where players should prepare for the toughest battles yet. The developers noted that the summoners of the Crucible are tragic figures—heroes ensnared by their own ambitions and lost causes.

A Frozen Landscape to Conquer

The gameplay presentation transitions into the Heian period, depicting an eerie, frozen terrain. As with previous eras, Tokugawa’s mission remains clear: cleanse the Crucible and restore harmony to the afflicted land by eradicating the Yōkai corruption that plagues it.

Release Date and Demo Information

Nioh 3 is set for release on February 6, 2026, for both PC and PlayStation 5 platforms. Fans eager to experience this forthcoming installment can get a taste ahead of the full launch with a free demo, scheduled for January 29. Notably, any progress made in this demo will carry over into the complete game, providing players with a unique early access experience.
