It’s been almost a month since the highly anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and its introduction has generated significant buzz in the gaming community. To gain insights on the console’s impact, we had the privilege of interviewing two developers from Virtuos, a studio known for its extensive experience in the gaming industry.
Virtuos may not be a household name, yet it has significantly influenced the gaming landscape for over 20 years. Their contributions include co-development and porting of acclaimed titles such as Heavy Rain, Horizon Zero Dawn, L. A.Noire, Dark Souls Remastered, Astral Chain, Cyberpunk 2077, Outriders, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Hogwarts Legacy, and their latest ventures like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
We spoke with Alex Heise, Director of Business Development at Virtuos North America, and Eoin O’Grady, Technical Director at Black Shamrock—a subsidiary that contributed to games like Back 4 Blood, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Kerbal Space Program 2, and more.

Success of the Nintendo Switch 2
With reports indicating that the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold over 3.5 million units within just four days, making it the fastest-selling console in that timeframe, were you anticipating this level of success? What’s your forecast for its future?
Eoin: Given the original Switch’s astonishing success, high expectations for the Switch 2’s sales performance were justified. With a growing base of loyal Nintendo fans and a booming handheld gaming market—not just smartphones—the stage was set for this level of popularity. The increase in demand for AAA games that can be played on-the-go, alongside the Switch 2’s ability to deliver unique gameplay experiences, indicates it could surpass its predecessor.
Alex: The unprecedented sales figures of the Switch 2 surprised many, including myself. It truly marks a significant milestone as Nintendo’s most iterative console since the NES to SNES transition. The strategic branding of the Switch 2 builds on the strengths of the original Switch, making the upgrade exceptionally appealing. Additionally, effective supply chain management ensured that ample units were available at launch, unlike previous consoles that suffered from stock shortages.
Insights on Features and Performance
What aspects of the new console stand out to you the most in terms of hardware and software?
Alex: As an enthusiastic day-one owner, I’ve experienced firsthand the superior build quality of the Switch 2, which feels more premium than its predecessor. A major improvement is the Joy-Cons’ attachment mechanism, providing enhanced durability. On the software side, the revamped eShop offers a much smoother user experience. Rapid loading times, personalized game recommendations, and a more engaging interface enhance the shopping experience for users navigating through an expansive library.
Eoin: The support for DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) in handheld mode significantly boosts performance and user experience. Additionally, the introduction of virtual game cards makes sharing games with friends simpler, tapping into a nostalgic gameplay element that appeals to many gamers today.
Performance Comparisons and New Technologies
Is the Switch 2 more comparable to the Xbox Series S than the PlayStation 4 in terms of performance, particularly for developers looking to port games?
Eoin: In terms of GPU, the Switch 2 marginally trails behind the Series S, especially in handheld mode. However, the Switch 2’s support for DLSS gives it a competitive edge in overall capabilities. When looking at CPU performance, the Switch 2 is more aligned with the PS4, making it conducive for porting games designed for the Series S and PS4.
Potential of DLSS and Ray Tracing
Despite its support for NVIDIA DLSS, few launch titles are utilizing it. What do you think accounts for this, and should developers make it a priority?
Eoin: The relevance of DLSS largely depends on the game’s needs. Titles with unique visual styles or those that are less reliant on high graphical fidelity may not benefit from it. However, third-party developers like those behind Cyberpunk 2077 have found success with DLSS, demonstrating its potential if properly implemented for the Switch 2.
The Switch 2’s ability to support hardware-accelerated ray tracing is another trending topic. Is there a benefit to focusing on this feature, or should resources be allocated elsewhere?
Eoin: Although hardware ray tracing presents unique challenges, it offers possibilities for improved graphics, particularly in shadows and reflections. Given the Switch 2 has less capability in this area compared to its competitors, it’s essential for developers to leverage it wisely to maintain an optimal gaming experience.
Unique Controller Features
In your discussion, you highlighted the enhanced features of the Switch 2’s controllers. How should developers utilize these advancements in their games?
Eoin: Nintendo’s advancements in controller technology are remarkable. The ability to use motion tracking devices and a mouse enhances gameplay experiences unforeseen on other consoles. Developers should not merely treat the Switch 2’s controller as a standard device but instead create innovative gameplay mechanics that utilize its unique capabilities, especially in genres like first-person shooters.
The Role of GameChat
Do you envision GameChat significantly changing social engagement within the Nintendo Switch 2 ecosystem?
Alex: GameChat enhances social interaction on the Switch 2, offering a secure environment for younger players. Integrated social features are fundamental for fostering connections among players, mimicking the best aspects of platforms like Discord while remaining tailored to the Nintendo experience.
Eoin: GameChat is particularly appealing for cooperative games and offers a modern way to engage with friends. The potential to connect with established streaming platforms could further its impact within the gaming community, enhancing social dynamics considerably.
