Disappointing Zoom Specifications of Galaxy S26 Ultra Camera: Same Sensor as Galaxy S25 Ultra, But Variable Aperture Could Enhance Performance

Samsung is known for its practice of reusing hardware components in its premium smartphones, such as cameras, and enhancing performance through software upgrades. Recent specifications for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, however, have unveiled some disappointing revelations. Notably, one of its zoom sensors is set to remain virtually the same as that found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Despite this setback, the anticipated return of a variable aperture lens on the next flagship could compensate for this shortfall.

Limited to a 5x Optical Zoom: Specs for the Galaxy S26 Ultra

According to a report from GalaxyClub, details about additional zoom-capable cameras on the Galaxy S26 Ultra are scarce. However, it notes that one of these cameras will feature a maximum resolution of 50MP alongside a 5x lossless optical zoom lens. This indicates that, in terms of hardware specs, the setup will not see any change, suggesting that Samsung will depend on advanced computational photography techniques to enhance image and video quality.

For instance, the Galaxy S25 Edge outperforms the S25 Ultra in producing higher-quality images at 4x zoom, despite lacking a dedicated telephoto lens. This suggests a potential pathway for Samsung to implement similar enhancements in the S26 Ultra. Additionally, there seems to be no significant alteration to the main camera, with indications pointing toward the continued use of the same 200MP sensor seen in previous models.

The potential of the variable aperture technology on the Galaxy S26 Ultra excites many enthusiasts. However, the latest reports do not reveal any substantial upgrades in this domain. As for interior specifications, the smartphone will maintain a 5, 000mAh battery, which is consistent with the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s capacity.

Although some aspects of Samsung’s upcoming flagship might appear underwhelming for prospective upgraders, it is premature to form definitive opinions, particularly with several months still remaining before the official launch.
