New Survey Reveals Near-Majority of Game Developers Consider Exiting Industry Amid Mass Layoffs and Instability

Mass Layoffs: A Growing Concern in the Video Game Industry

The video game industry is currently grappling with the significant issue of mass layoffs, which has affected job security for developers over recent years. Whether contributing to a blockbuster title or a game that failed to catch traction, developers are increasingly uncertain about the stability of their employment. A recent survey conducted by Skillsearch highlights just how pervasive this anxiety is within the sector.

Key Findings from the Skillsearch Survey

According to insights shared by GamesIndustry. Biz, Skillsearch’s Salary and Satisfaction survey gathered responses from over 1, 000 professionals in the gaming industry, spanning regions such as Europe, North America, the UK, APAC, and MENA. The results revealed that a concerning 44% of participants are contemplating leaving the industry due to the ongoing layoffs.

Impact of Layoffs on Job Security

The survey also uncovered that 22% of participants had experienced layoffs within the previous year, while 12% were let go more than a year ago. Additionally, 28% reported layoffs occurring within their studios, affecting their colleagues even if they weren’t personally impacted.

Of those who faced unemployment, merely 45% succeeded in securing new positions. Yet, only 27% of these individuals felt a sense of security in their current roles. The timeline for finding new employment varied, with 20% taking four to six months to land a new job, while 33% succeeded within one to three months. Alarmingly, 55% have yet to find new roles, leading nearly half of the respondents to consider careers outside of the gaming realm.

Echoes from the GDC State of the Game Industry Report

These findings resonate with the results of the GDC State of the Game Industry 2026 Report, which noted that 25% of game developers had been laid off within the last two years, with 48% struggling to find new positions. As one survey participant expressed, “I’ve been laid off so many times in the last five to six years, had so many turbulent issues working in games. I have trauma and can’t ever fully trust anywhere now.”

The Dilemma of Passion vs. Stability

Despite the industry’s inherent passion-driven nature, the mass exodus of experienced developers presents a critical challenge. While many individuals dream of creating and contributing to video games, the constant instability discourages talent retention and deters newcomers from entering the field. The potential for mentorship diminishes when seasoned professionals are primarily replaced in favor of budget cuts, adversely affecting overall quality and innovation in games.

The Consequences of Corporate Decisions

Recent layoffs at EA, particularly within the Battlefield Studios teams following the success of Battlefield 6 as 2025’s best-selling game, exemplify the troubling trend. Such cuts illustrate a troubling disconnect between commercial success and job security, prompting top talent to seek stability elsewhere and discouraging hopeful entrants from pursuing careers in game development. This ongoing volatility threatens the industry’s future, potentially leading to dire consequences if these trends persist.
