Microsoft and OpenAI have a strong partnership, with OpenAI receiving substantial funding from Microsoft to further develop its generative AI models. Additionally, Microsoft leverages OpenAI’s models to enhance their own Copilot assistants and also makes OpenAI’s models available on their Azure cloud services.
According to undisclosed sources, a recent report published by The Information reveals that Microsoft and OpenAI have teamed up to collaborate on a data center initiative, with plans to create an advanced AI-powered supercomputer. The projected cost of this project, as stated in the report, is estimated to be approximately $100 billion.
According to the Information, the project is currently in development and is known by the code name “Stargate”. This name is also shared with the well-known science fiction film and television franchise from MGM. In this fictional world, the Stargate program is a highly confidential division of the US Air Force, where individuals from Earth use an alien-created portal found buried in Egypt to travel to other planets.
According to the latest report, Microsoft and OpenAI are currently in the third stage of a five-phase plan to construct and enhance a supercomputer that will be integrated into their data center network. It has been reported that Microsoft will provide the funding for this project, with an expected completion date of 2028.
Additionally, it has been reported that the success of the Stargate project is contingent upon OpenAI’s ability to release its advanced AI LLM model, GPT-5, within a specific timeframe. According to The Information, OpenAI is currently aiming to launch GPT-5 in early 2025.
On the same day, OpenAI officially announced their Voice Engine, coinciding with the release of this new report. This project aims to develop an artificial voice by utilizing a 15-second clip of a real person’s voice. However, the company has not yet made this new model available, citing concerns about its potential for creating “deepfake”voices of real individuals.
