New GOG Owner Boldly Challenges Steam’s Dominance: ‘With 80% Market Share, There’s Room to Compete’

CD Projekt RED Sells GOG to Co-Founder Michał Kiciński

On December 29, 2025, CD Projekt RED made waves in the gaming industry by announcing the sale of its digital distribution platform, GOG (formerly known as Good Old Games). The platform was acquired by Michał Kiciński, a co-founder of both GOG and CD Projekt, for a reported sum of $25 million.

Kiciński’s Return to the Gaming Arena

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Kiciński expressed excitement about re-entering the gaming sector after a prolonged hiatus. His departure from CD Projekt RED coincided with the reveal of the original Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer on January 10, 2013. Now, amidst a gaming landscape dominated by Valve’s Steam, which recently broke its user concurrency record, Kiciński is enthusiastic about the potential for GOG to carve out its niche.

Embracing Competition and Identifying Opportunities

“I see opportunities more than negatives, ”Kiciński remarked. He emphasized that while Steam commands a staggering 80% market share, this dominance poses less of an obstacle and more of an opportunity to capture a segment of that market. He stated, “There is one big competitor, and it’ll be difficult for them to defend the market.”Kiciński believes that GOG should focus on its distinct identity in the gaming community, which is already well-respected among gamers.

Strategic Direction for GOG

Importantly, Kiciński clarified that he does not intend to compete directly with Steam in the realm of triple-A titles, as the Epic Games Store has attempted to do. Instead, GOG will prioritize partnerships with smaller developers and publishers, promoting a diverse offering tailored to its audience. Furthermore, Kiciński assured fans that GOG will continue to support CD Projekt RED by selling its games at rates favorable to the Polish company. This ensures that those who wish to support CDPR will find GOG to be their preferred platform, as it directs more funds to the studio.

Kiciński’s vision for GOG seems not only rooted in the gaming area’s current trends but also driven by a desire to foster innovation while grounded in core values, presenting a promising future for the platform.
