According to reports, Sam Frizelle, a tennis player at the University of Florida, is planning to join the NCAA Transfer Portal once it opens on May 6.
Frizelle, a highly-touted 5-star recruit, has competed in three doubles matches this year, with a record of one win and two losses. In partnership with Ben Hudson, he emerged victorious against Inaki Braun Simo and Matthew Hewitt of Florida Southern College. Additionally, he has been managing a hand injury throughout the season.
According to a post by College Tennis Nation on X (formerly known as Twitter), it has been reported that Frizelle intends to enter the Transfer Portal and is seeking a transfer from the University of South Florida.
On March 31, the University of South Florida, ranked 69th, was narrowly defeated by Virginia Commonwealth University, ranked 41st, with a final score of 4-3.
The USF team took a 1-0 lead after winning their matches, with Alvin Tudorica and Erik Grevelius as well as Elijah Cham and Tom Pavlekovich-Smith securing victories in the doubles matches.
Alvin Tudorica was defeated by Mathis Bondaz in his singles match 6-2, 6-1. However, Elijah Cham was able to secure a victory for the team by winning his match against Romain Gales in a three-set battle 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Augustin Cuellar also contributed to the team’s lead by winning his match against German Samofalov 7-5, 6-4. As a result, USF took a 3-1 lead in the overall match.
After Hamza El Amine from VCU won against Bruno Oliveira with a score of 7-5, 7-6(1), the tie remained undecided. However, Tom Pisane’s defeat with a score of 7-6(4), 2-6, 0-6 against Oscar Pinto Sansano leveled the tie. It was ultimately Matisse Bobichon’s hard-won victory of 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-4 against Erik Grevelius that secured the win for VCU.
On April 5th, which falls on a Friday, USF will take on Wichita State University.
Danielle Collins Claims Victory at 2024 Miami Open as Former NCAA Collegiate Tennis Player
In 2024, Danielle Collins, a native of Florida and a former two-time NCAA singles champion, achieved her first WTA 1000 title at the Miami Open in front of her hometown fans. Despite starting the tournament with a ranking of 53, Collins became the lowest-ranked tennis player to ever win the Miami Open title. As a result of her victory, she is now ranked World No. 22.
Collins advanced to the second round after defeating Bernarda Pera 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. She then continued her winning streak, beating Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. In the third round, Collins easily defeated Elina Avanesyan 6-1, 6-2.
In the fourth round, the American easily defeated Sorana Cirstea with a score of 6-3, 6-2. She continued her impressive performance in the quarterfinals, defeating No. 23 seed Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2 with her exceptional tennis skills. In the semifinals, Collins once again dominated her opponent, Ekaterina Alexandrova, with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
In the championship match, Collins emerged victorious against the No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina with a score of 7-5, 6-3, earning the largest title of her career thus far.
