My Strategy to Combat WhatsApp Spam While Keeping Important Messages Intact

My Strategy to Combat WhatsApp Spam While Keeping Important Messages Intact

While I appreciate how WhatsApp has transformed communication by effectively replacing traditional SMS messaging, the prevalence of spam has become an overwhelming issue. After receiving a barrage of unsolicited messages, such as “You’ve been selected for a high-paying remote job, ” I decided it was time to implement changes to my app settings. Below, I share my approach to maintaining a spam-free WhatsApp experience while ensuring I don’t miss important messages.

Limiting Data Visibility to Combat Spam

The first step in preventing spam is to avoid becoming an easy target. Since spammers utilize automated tools to harvest active phone numbers for their campaigns, restricting your data visibility can significantly reduce the likelihood of your number being added to spam lists.

To achieve this, adjust your privacy settings to share information only with your contacts. This minimizes the risk of a spammer accessing your details. Follow these steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp and click on the Settings menu from the top-right corner.
  2. Navigate to Privacy and select the My Contacts (or My Contacts Except) setting for the following:
  • Last Seen and Online: If set to Everyone, it allows anyone to see your online status, including potential spammers.
  • Profile Picture: An active profile picture indicates a functioning account, which spammers can exploit.
  • About: Including information in your About section signals account activity.
  • Links: Restrict profile links to your contacts to prevent attracting spammers.
  • Status: Regularly updated statuses can be a marker of an active account, inviting spam.

In my experience, there’s no need to share this information with strangers, and it has never hindered my ability to connect with others. However, bear in mind that the effects of these changes may take time to materialize, especially if you are already on several spam lists. Expect to spend some time reporting and blocking spam accounts.

Identifying and Managing Forwarded Spam Messages

Many spam and scam messages circulate via mass forwarding, often from the same or various users. Therefore, exercise caution with any message marked as Forwarded many times.

This label often indicates scams or misleading information shared through a chain of users, typically exceeding five forwards, which are designed to go viral. To protect yourself, consider enabling the option to block unknown senders who send mass forward messages.

To do this, access Settings in WhatsApp, navigate to Privacy, and then select Advanced. Turn on the Block unknown account messages feature.

You needn’t fear missing genuine messages from unknown numbers, as WhatsApp’s filtering is proficient at distinguishing between spamming bots and authentic senders. I have yet to encounter issues while using this feature.

Restricting Unknown Users from Group Invitations

Every time I was added to a group by an unknown user, it alarmingly often related to inappropriate content or illegal activities, resulting in incessant notifications. Limiting this feature to only your contacts can help shield you from such unwanted group invitations.

To do this within WhatsApp, go to Privacy settings and select My Contacts under the Groups option. This modification means that anyone not in your contacts wishing to add you to a group will first need to send you a group invitation.

The Importance of Reporting and Blocking Spam

It may be easy to overlook spam messages by simply deleting them or marking them as read in bulk, but this action can worsen the situation by designating you as a target for additional spam.

Thus, it is essential to take a few moments to report and block the spammer’s number. Blocking prevents them from sending further messages, reducing spam in your account. Reporting informs WhatsApp of the spammer’s activities, allowing the platform to assess and potentially block their number based on their last five messages.

Remember, while the Block button is conveniently located above the spam message, opening the message can expose you to further spam through read receipts. It’s advisable to block spam messages without opening them. Simply tap and hold the chat, then choose Block from the drop-down menu, ensuring to check the Report to WhatsApp option in the prompt.

Spam messages can be not only annoying but also potentially harmful, such as those containing malware. By implementing the steps outlined above, you should notice a significant reduction in spam. If WhatsApp continues to be overwhelmed with junk, consider evaluating alternatives to the app.
