Microsoft Edge will let you limit how much RAM it consumes

Microsoft is working on an exciting new addition to its browser. Users who are dissatisfied with the amount of RAM Microsoft Edge uses will be pleased to know that the company is experimenting with a built-in memory limiter that will keep the browser from surpassing limits set by the user.

The recently added RAM controls were discovered in Edge Canary by @Leopeva64 on X (formerly known as Twitter). Microsoft intends to offer the option for customers to restrict memory usage while gaming, which the browser can detect automatically, or always. A dedicated slider will enable users to set a specific maximum memory limit for Edge. Additionally, users will have the ability to monitor RAM usage and limitations in the “Browser essential”flyout.

The forthcoming memory limiter will benefit every Microsoft Edge user, regardless of the capabilities of their hardware. By limiting RAM usage, it will free up resources for more critical applications during tasks that require high resource usage, such as gaming or using a low-end device with limited memory compared to modern Android smartphones.

Undoubtedly, deliberately restricting the amount of memory used by Microsoft Edge will not go unnoticed. Microsoft cautions that reducing RAM usage can have a detrimental effect on the browser’s performance.

To access new memory controls for Microsoft Edge, simply update to the latest Canary version from the Edge Insider program. Keep in mind that this is a controlled feature rollout, so only select testers may have access at this time. You can check if your Edge Canary has the new RAM limiter by going to Settings > Performance > Performance Detector.

Along with the RAM limiter, Microsoft is also developing a new Game view. This feature aims to provide users with tips, guides, and “other helpful content”when they switch from playing a game to using Microsoft Edge. Users will have the option to disable this feature in the browser, assuming it becomes available in the Stable Channel.

As a reminder, Microsoft has recently re-released Edge 123 on the Stable Channel following the resolution of compatibility issues with “specific enterprise configurations.”
