Anticipation Builds for Bungie’s ‘Marathon’ Release
Bungie is gearing up for the launch of its highly anticipated first-person extraction shooter, Marathon. Following the recent open preview known as the Server Slam, players on both PS5 and PC had an opportunity to experience the game for free prior to its official release on March 5, 2026.
Feedback and Insights from the Server Slam
The Server Slam weekend provided valuable feedback for Bungie, enabling the developer to implement several fixes during the event. Although some concerns will be addressed in subsequent updates after launch, the proactive approach has showcased Bungie’s commitment to improving player experience.
Sales Performance and Engagement Metrics
In a recent report by data analytics firm Alinea Analytics, Marathon emerged as one of the standout titles from the Steam Next Fest, coming in second in terms of wishlist additions following a popular PvE pirate-themed survival game, Windrose.
Alinea’s report reveals that Marathon has already recorded nearly 250, 000 sales on Steam as of yesterday, March 2, 2026. However, the game’s engagement data indicates a noticeable drop in player activity on the second day of the Server Slam, raising questions about long-term engagement.
Launch Content and Future Seasons
In conjunction with the sales estimates, Bungie unveiled a detailed roadmap for the game’s launch content through a recent PlayStation Blog post. Notably, Bungie has committed to making seasonal updates accessible to all players without requiring additional purchases for DLCs or expansions. This strategy aims to enhance player retention by resetting vaults each season, creating a more even playing field for newcomers and seasoned players alike.

Brian Ekberg, principal content marketing manager at Bungie, emphasized the intention behind the reset feature, saying it provides a chance for all players to engage fresh with each season, facilitating a dynamic and competitive atmosphere. While this design choice may spark concern about the value of acquired loot, progression mechanics will ensure players can still gain strength and craft their ideal playstyles over time.
What to Expect in Upcoming Seasons
The first season of content, titled Death is the First Step, will introduce a new zone called Cryo Archive, a new weapon, and a competitive Ranked Mode. Players will also have access to the initial launch elements, which include three main zones, six Runner Shells (plus an additional seventh), various factions, and an extensive arsenal of 28 weapons equipped with unique mods and implants for customized loadouts.
Following the inaugural season, Season 2: Nightfall is set to launch in June 2026, introducing a revamped Dire Marsh map named Night Marsh, a new Runner Shell called Sentinel, and enhanced gameplay elements like cores and a Cradle system that enhances player customization. The details for Season 3 are eagerly awaited and are expected to premiere in August 2026.

With fresh expectations and a wealth of content on the horizon, Marathon is poised to make a significant entrance on PC and PS5 this coming March 5, 2026. Players and fans alike are eager to see how these innovations will shape their gaming experience.
