Exciting Updates Arrive for Mafia: The Old Country
In August, the eagerly anticipated fourth installment of the Mafia series made its debut. Developed by Hanger 13, this third-person action-adventure game immerses players in the vibrant setting of 1990s Sicily, focusing on a prequel narrative centered around Enzo Favara. Despite the positive reception for the campaign, many players felt that the free-roaming mode fell short in content offerings. However, a significant update is set to enhance this experience.
Introducing the Free Ride Mode
Scheduled for release tomorrow, the eagerly awaited free roam enhancement, named Free Ride, pays homage to the original Mafia’s Free Ride Extreme mode. This new addition includes a Challenges system that invites players to engage in various combat, stealth, and racing events. Additionally, players can alter the time of day and weather conditions by visiting locations like the Vineyard or Enzo’s apartment within this mode.
Completing Challenges will earn you the Dinari in-game currency to spend on the new outfits, charms, weapons, and vehicles unlocked by progressing through this content (as well as on items unlocked via the campaign), explains the game’s Associate Design Director Josh Zammit.“We’ve also included a number of other fresh and exciting features for players to sink their teeth into, and I hope fans enjoy them.”
New Modes to Enhance Gameplay
Hanger 13 is also introducing a mode inspired by “classic Italian cinema, ”named Cinema Siciliano. This mode transforms the game’s visuals into a nostalgic black-and-white format, enhances audio quality to a vintage style, and eliminates much of the user interface, creating a truly cinematic experience. Accompanying this mode is a new photo feature that allows players to capture stunning game moments with a variety of filters and display options.
Another thrilling addition is the first-person driving perspective, a first for the franchise. Players can now take the wheel, experiencing intricately detailed car interiors and dynamic close-up animations of characters inside the vehicles.
Challenging Gameplay with Classic Difficulty
The update further includes a Classic Difficulty setting reminiscent of the challenges posed in the original Mafia game and its remake. This mode promises tougher enemies, less reliable health regeneration, and unique mechanics that cause players to lose ammo while reloading partially used magazines.
“I’m certain our hardcore fans will be happy that we’ve brought back Classic Difficulty, ”adds Zammit. Although I’d recommend playing the game on one of the original difficulties first, Classic definitely puts your skills to the ultimate test.

The Free Ride Update for Mafia: The Old Country will be accessible on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 starting tomorrow, November 20. Players can look forward to diving into these fresh features and challenges that aim to redefine their Mafia gaming experience.
