M5 vs M4 Specifications: Comprehensive Comparison and Insights

The recent unboxing video of the new iPad Pro has not only showcased Apple’s latest flagship tablet but has also shed light on the specifications of its new M5 chipset in comparison to the previous M4 version. Although the differences on paper appear minimal, this might not be entirely negative for users.

M5 and M4 Core Configuration and Clock Speed Stay Consistent

The M4 chip was structured with a ‘3 + 6’ architecture, consisting of three performance cores and six efficiency cores. Remarkably, the M5 maintains this identical configuration, which suggests continuity rather than radical changes. Notably, both chips operate with performance cores clocked at 4.42GHz, though the M5 introduces an enhancement in L2 cache size.

Recent testing on both the M5 and M4 iPad Pro reveals that the older chipset is outfitted with 4MB of L2 cache, while the M5 boosts this to an impressive 6MB—a 50 percent increase. Similar to Apple’s A19 and A19 Pro chips, the M5 appears to utilize the cutting-edge 3nm ‘N3P’ architecture, which allows it to enhance performance without demanding additional power.

While not officially confirmed, there are hopes that Apple may have implemented architectural advancements in the M5 akin to those introduced with the A19 Pro, particularly concerning the efficiency cores. Previous analyses highlighted that the efficiency cores saw extraordinary improvements—reportedly achieving up to a 29 percent increase in performance without any additional power consumption when compared to the A18 Pro’s efficiency cores.

Significant RAM Upgrade: A 50 Percent Increase

The unboxed 13-inch M5 iPad Pro showcased 12GB of RAM, a notable upgrade from the 8GB in its predecessor. With the new 9-core CPU, this indicates a potential elevation in the base RAM configuration, allowing for enhanced multitasking capabilities, quicker AI operations, and increased memory allocation for demanding AAA games.

At this juncture, these outlined differences primarily establish the M5 as a modest generational advancement over the M4. Prospective buyers should weigh these enhancements carefully, as upgrading from the M4 to the M5 might not be justified for everyone. As new developments arise, we will continue to furnish updates, so keep an eye out for further information.
