Voice dictation has the potential to significantly enhance productivity, provided it operates reliably. Personally, I’ve experienced challenges when attempting to dictate in foreign languages; often, I found myself dedicating more time to editing than actual writing. However, Willow has transformed this experience for me. This AI-driven keyboard application features remarkably accurate dictation capabilities, and here’s how it makes a notable difference.
Willow: A Game Changer in Voice Dictation
Despite the existence of voice dictation technology for several years, achieving 100% reliability remains elusive. Willow aims to redefine this landscape by employing advanced AI to better interpret human speech effectively.
Available on iPhone and Mac, this keyboard app allows users to dictate naturally while ensuring accurate transcription and formatting. Moreover, Willow automatically corrects grammar issues and inserts punctuation as you speak. As a comprehensive keyboard solution, it also facilitates minor edits or last-minute additions, which has been exceedingly beneficial for my writing process.
Willow’s context-aware features ensure that your messages are formatted appropriately, all while preserving your unique voice. Additionally, the app actively combats typos, thereby reducing the chances of sending misspelled names or other critical errors.
For those moments when crafting messages feels more like a chore, Willow offers handy AI rewriting tools. Simply speak a basic draft, and the application will transform it into polished, coherent text.
Importantly, Willow prioritizes user privacy. Unlike many comparable applications, all your transcripts are stored locally on your device, and you have the option to opt out of the model training processes altogether.
Getting Started with Willow on iPhone
To begin using Willow, download and install the app, then create an account. The free version allows for dictation of up to 2, 000 words per week, while an unlimited subscription is available for $12 monthly.
After installation, activate Willow by opening the app and toggling the microphone access option on. This will enable the app to capture your voice for dictation.

Next, launch an application like Gmail and select Compose. Your default virtual keyboard will appear. To switch to Willow’s keyboard, tap the globe icon located at the bottom left of the screen.

The keyboard will now change to Willow’s layout (you may have to tap the globe icon multiple times if you have several keyboards installed).Tap Speak at the top to start dictating your message. Willow is adept at recognizing over 100 languages; I successfully dictated in English, Spanish, and Romanian without any issues.

You also have the option to manually set your preferred language in the app under Profile -> App Language.

As someone who speaks with a slight accent, I’ve struggled with various voice-to-text applications. However, Willow performed admirably, transcribing messages with remarkable accuracy.

In instances where I stuttered, the app effectively filled in the gaps. I even tested it by singing, and Willow accurately captured most of the lyrical content. Although some minor errors occurred, the comprehensive keyboard access allowed me to correct them quickly. Furthermore, there is an option to add specific terms or names in the Dictionary section, enhancing Willow’s understanding of particular words.

One observation I’ve made is that while Willow supports voice commands such as “new line”or “dash, ”they tended to work better when I spoke slowly. Keep this in mind during your dictation sessions.
As you use the app, you can access all your transcripts and even re-use them as needed.

Leveraging AI to Enhance Transcripts
Once your transcript appears in Willow, you can employ AI to refine your message. Remember, you only need to dictate a few words for the AI to complete the rest. When the text shows up, select the magic pen icon on the keyboard.

Choose from various options such as Fix grammar, Make formal, Make friendly, or Use Gen-Z tone.

If the initial AI suggestion doesn’t meet your expectations, simply tap the Refresh button to view alternative versions. Once you find a suitable option, you can seamlessly insert it into your text.
Additionally, you can personalize your communication style by navigating to Personalization and selecting an appropriate App Preset, such as Casual messaging or Work messaging.

Privacy Considerations
Due to Apple’s iOS infrastructure, Willow requires continuous access to background audio which can lead to battery drain and raises certain privacy concerns.
To mitigate these issues, it is advisable to deactivate Willow after each dictation session. Although this may seem inconvenient, the app provides features that simplify this process.
One useful strategy is to configure a session timeout. This can be adjusted in the app under Profile -> Audio Settings.

You can set your Audio Session Timeout; I recommend a setting of 1 minute, though you can extend it up to 2 hours.

Alternatively, you may turn off Willow via its lock screen widget.

You can also activate Willow directly from the keyboard, although disabling it cannot be done from the same location; the lock screen widget is recommended for that purpose. These functionalities streamline the user experience without needing to open the app each time.

Apple simplifies the switching between virtual keyboards on iPhone, so feel free to explore additional options. Check out our suggestions for third-party keyboard apps to diversify your experience.
