Introducing Google’s Circle to Search: Enhanced Real-Time Translation
Launched in January 2024, Circle to Search leverages the advanced capabilities of Google’s Gemini technology. Initially debuting on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, this innovative feature soon made its way to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro by the end of the month.
Seamless Search with Gesture Controls
This cutting-edge tool allows users to interact with their screens through gestures such as circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping, enabling quick searches without the need to switch apps. While translation was already a function of Circle to Search, the latest enhancements promise a more fluid experience by enabling continuous text translation while scrolling.
Solving Translation Interruptions
Prior to this update, users were forced to restart the translation for each new section of text or page they navigated, leading to frustration—particularly while browsing social media or exploring online restaurant menus.
Translation is one of the most-used features in Circle to Search — you can get more context for social posts from creators who speak a different language or browse menus while planning your restaurant visits during travels. However, until recently, it was necessary to restart the translation for each scroll or content update.
How to Activate Circle to Search
To utilize this feature, users can activate Circle to Search by long-pressing the home button or the navigation bar. Afterward, simply tap the “Translate”icon followed by the “scroll and translate”button. This allows seamless translation of text as users scroll down a page or switch to different applications, eliminating interruptions.
Gradual Rollout of Continuous Translation
Similar to its initial launch, the rollout of this new continuous translation capability is starting with select Samsung Galaxy devices this week, with plans to expand to other compatible Android phones in the near future.
Ongoing Enhancements to Circle to Search
Google remains committed to improving Circle to Search by introducing new features regularly. For instance, last year, the company introduced an audio search function, enabling users to identify songs by simply letting their device listen, regardless of whether they sing or hum the tune.
Beyond Smartphones
Circle to Search’s functionality is not confined to smartphones alone. The recently released Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite now features a 10.9-inch screen, an Exynos 1380 processor, and includes the S-Pen, all while supporting Circle to Search.
