007 First Light: A Fusion of Uncharted and HITMAN – Developer Q&A Highlights ‘Narrative Driving Progress’

Exclusive Insights from Gamescom 2025: IO Interactive Unveils 007 First Light

At Gamescom 2025, IO Interactive provided an exclusive, behind-closed-doors look at its eagerly awaited title, 007 First Light. The booth made a striking impression, highlighted by a gleaming Aston Martin that underscored the stature of the James Bond franchise.

Cinematic Gameplay Experience

During the presentation, attendees were treated to footage from one of the game’s initial missions. It quickly became apparent that IO Interactive is taking a bold departure from its acclaimed HITMAN series, embracing a far more cinematic approach. Unsurprisingly, this stylistic change aligns perfectly with the essence of James Bond, a legendary character esteemed not just from Ian Fleming’s novels but also his extensive filmography.

In this new iteration, Bond exhibits a stronger personality—more flamboyant and assertive compared to the coolly detached Agent 47. This portrayal is tied to an origin narrative focusing on how Bond attains his iconic double-0 status. In the mission presented, Bond is tasked with surveillance at a high-profile event, though his instinctive curiosity leads him to investigate suspicious activity within the venue.

Gameplay and Mission Structure

The gameplay demonstrated an array of gadgets at Bond’s disposal, yet it is clear that 007 First Light will differ significantly from the open-ended structure familiar to HITMAN fans. The pacing and mission design seem influenced by the Uncharted series, featuring grand set pieces reminiscent of Naughty Dog’s storytelling style.

This shift toward a more linear structure has the potential to appeal to a wide audience; the multiplatform launch is set to introduce the Bond experience to gamers beyond the exclusive reach of previous franchises. As of now, the game appears visually impressive, utilizing an updated version of the Glacier engine, although there were instances of frame rate drops during the demonstration—common in a Pre-Alpha state.

Insight from IO Interactive

Following the presentation, I had the opportunity to speak with IO Interactive’s Senior Licensing Producer, Theuns Smit. The studio is targeting a 2026 launch for 007 First Light on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Can you explain what your role entails?

As you would expect from a licensed IP like James Bond, we have a great collaboration between IO Interactive and our partners at Amazon and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. This means that everything that goes into the game, we collaborate with them on that, so there’s submissions and reviews and approvals and all of that. It also means that, as we’ve been crafting this experience, we have been granted access to the consultants who have been working on this IP as well, collaborating together on all of that. I help keep track of things that are moving in, getting approved, and working with our brand partners. James Bond is synonymous with working with Omega, Aston Martin, Land Rover, these folks were all equally and extremely excited to partner on this, and I just help manage those interactions.

A Rich Narrative Experience

007 First Light is set to deliver an original narrative, distinct from previous Bond adventures. Smit explains, “From the onset, we aimed to create a standalone origin story that explores Bond’s transformation into a double-0 agent.” Players will experience Bond’s journey from a novice Royal Navy officer to a seasoned spy, navigating the complexities of his dual identity.

The narrative incorporates Bond’s traditional lore, including the requisite two kills for earning his license to kill, yet introduces strategic gameplay elements that enable discretion and resource management. While some mission segments may emphasize action, others will afford players opportunities for stealth and tactical decision-making.

Dynamic Mission Design

When prompting about the balance between linear and open mission structures, Smit noted that the narrative structure dictates the size and complexity of missions.“Our focus is on delivering a rich gameplay experience that accompanies a strong storyline. Some missions will be expansive, while others will be more focused.” This emphasizes the studio’s commitment to quality storytelling interwoven with engaging gameplay mechanics.

Agency and Resource Management

In the presentation, a greyed-out lure ability hinted at the game’s unique concept of player ‘agency’.Smit elaborated, saying that players will draw on Bond’s instincts and charm as integral parts of gameplay, with moments designed for players to bluff or manipulate their way through challenges.

Disguises and Character Progression

While HITMAN‘s disguise mechanics were central to its gameplay, 007 First Light will pivot away from that concept. Smit indicated that the game instead emphasizes Bond’s innate charm and social manipulation skills, allowing players to unlock contextual outfits based on the missions.

As for character development, it will be predominantly narrative-driven with progressive unlocks throughout the gameplay experience. Bond evolves through critical moments that deepen his character and skills, aligning player growth with the protagonist’s journey.

Gameplay Length and Replayability

Regarding the game’s length, Smit cautioned that it would vary based on individual playstyles, emphasizing the diverse environments and immersive experiences. Players can replay missions with modified goals, encouraging creative approaches to challenges—whether stealth-oriented or gadget-focused.

Future Developments and Game Status

At this time, IO Interactive is concentrating on delivering a standalone experience without the competitive leaderboard system featured in HITMAN. The presentation showcased a Pre-Alpha build of the game, indicating there is still work ahead to fine-tune the experience.

Good to know. Thank you for your time.
