KB5044400: Microsoft resolves Windows 11 Mica issue and introduces Start menu updates in Dev channel

Today, Microsoft has introduced a new build for Windows 11 Insiders in the Dev Channel. The latest update, designated Build 26120.2130 under KB5044400, addresses a Mica-related issue, improves clipboard history functionality, includes modifications to the Start menu, and more.

Below is the complete changelog:

Changes and Improvements Gradually Rolled Out to the Dev Channel with Toggle On*

[Start Menu]

  • The label “All apps” has been shortened to simply “All” in the Start menu.

[Input]

  • A new Gamepad keyboard layout for the on-screen keyboard is being gradually introduced in Windows 11. This feature allows users to navigate and type using Xbox controllers, with enhancements such as button accelerators (for example: pressing the X button for backspace, Y button for spacebar). Additionally, keyboard keys have been aligned vertically to improve navigation using the controller.

[Narrator]

  • A new shortcut “Narrator key + control + X” has been added to copy the last spoken text by Narrator to the clipboard. This follows the existing pattern of using “Narrator key + X” that repeats the last phrase aloud, making it easier to memorize similar shortcuts. These shortcuts are helpful for quickly reviewing and copying content like notes, descriptions, or codes/numbers.
  • Narrator will now automatically read the contents of emails in the new Outlook app, similar to the functionality in the classic Outlook.

[Networking]

  • With the netsh wlan show networks command, users will be able to view SSIDs encoded in UTF-8. This update ensures that Wi-Fi SSIDs containing Unicode characters, such as emojis, are displayed correctly within the netsh command output. This feature is rolling out progressively, so not all Insiders in the Canary Channel will see it immediately.

Fixes Gradually Rolled Out to the Dev Channel with Toggle On*

[General]

  • Resolved an issue affecting a small number of Insiders where the login screen content would fail to load after locking the PC and waking it from sleep, preventing sign-in.

[Input]

  • Addressed an underlying issue that caused clipboard history to not show copied items.

[Taskbar]

  • Corrected a problem where pressing WIN + multiple times would not cycle through multiple windows of an open application in the taskbar, such as with WIN + 1.

[Narrator]

  • Improved performance issues where Narrator would start lagging after 15 minutes of continuous use with a single application.
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in Narrator announcing “contains style”when focusing on text with styling attributes like bullets or numbering in apps like Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook.
  • Corrected an issue where some dialogs in Narrator did not apply the 200% text scaling setting in Windows.

[Live Captions]

  • Fixed a crashing issue with live captions affecting some users in the previous build when attempting to use this feature.

[Other]

  • Resolved a problem where Mica would not function properly when using a slideshow for the desktop background.

Known Issues

[Taskbar]

  • [NEW] Investigating reports of explorer.exe crashing for some Insiders when hovering over certain open apps in the taskbar.

[Start Menu]

  • If you click or tap a letter in the All apps list of the Start menu, the list may break. If this occurs, rebooting or restarting explorer.exe may resolve the issue.
