iPhone 18 Pro Prototype May Feature Front-Facing Camera in Corner, Apple Integrates Face ID Components Behind OLED Display

Apple’s forthcoming smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, are expected to make a significant design shift by replacing the standard pill-shaped cutout with a punch-hole front-facing camera. This change aims to place all Face ID components behind the OLED display, bringing the company closer to its vision of a completely immersive full-screen iPhone. While Android manufacturers have experimented with punch-hole designs, these devices often lack the advanced facial recognition features that Apple’s Face ID offers. Recent rumors indicate that a prototype of the iPhone 18 Pro is currently being assessed, featuring a front camera positioned in one of the corners, although it remains unconfirmed whether this model will progress to mass production.

Design Developments and Production Testing for the iPhone 18

Initially, there was speculation regarding the front camera’s placement, with many anticipating it would be centered, given its proximity to the TrueDepth camera and the necessary Face ID components. However, according to insights from Weibo’s Smart Pikachu, one version of the iPhone 18 Pro may feature the camera located at the upper-left corner, resembling a choice made by Samsung in its earlier Galaxy S10 models. Notably, the latter positioned its camera on the right corner.

The source did not elaborate on Apple’s motivation for this corner placement, and it is important to underscore that this could be just one of several prototypes undergoing evaluation. Additionally, reports suggest that Apple is actively testing production lines for the iPhone 18 series, with Smart Pikachu previously indicating that the integration of micro-transparent glass might allow Apple to successfully implement in-display Face ID technology. The effectiveness of this innovative feature will become clearer as the official launch approaches later this year.
