Exciting Developments Surrounding Cory Barlog’s Next Game
The highly-anticipated next project by Cory Barlog, known for his leadership in creating the acclaimed God of War II (2007) and God of War (2018), was notably absent from the February 2026 State of Play presentation. However, insights from two credible insiders suggest a major announcement is on the horizon, with a reveal expected in the summer as the game gears up for a tentative launch in 2027.
One prominent insider, NatetheHate, shared on X that he anticipates further news about the game soon:
“Cory is working on his own project and it remains unannounced. I’ll share more when I can. We will hear about it before 2027. My expectation is around summer. Unless a major delay happens, the game will be out in 2027.”
Another well-regarded insider, Shinobi602, supported this claim on the ResetEra forums. Responding to speculation about a 2028 target, which included the possibility of a small team focusing on the recently announced God of War remake trilogy, Shinobi602 clarified:
“Not that far (barring any delays, of course).Like I said, given the quarter they’re targeting, I do expect that it will be announced this year. Probably May State of Play or the summer Keighleys (SGF).As of now, I don’t know yet. If not by then, then they’ve either pushed the release out further or doing a shorter reveal to release.”
In a previous statement from September 2021, Barlog confirmed he would not direct God of War Ragnarök, passing the reins to Eric Williams. Although credited as Creative Director and Producer for the game, he has since embarked on another venture, which remains largely undisclosed.
Rumors have floated about the possibility of a sci-fi setting for this new project, yet concrete details remain elusive. The only substantial gossip emerged in July 2025, from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who indicated that the project is progressing well. He noted that while it may not be a new intellectual property in the strictest sense, it could offer a fresh experience:
“This appears to be a hint that Barlog and his team at Sony Santa Monica are possibly working on a PlayStation IP that is being revived after a long slumber.”
If the insiders’ speculations hold true, fans can anticipate an announcement within months. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting update!
