Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Claims Record for Game of the Year Awards
In a remarkable turn of events, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has edged past Elden Ring, previously the record holder for the highest number of Game of the Year awards. This news, which has been trending online, highlights a key milestone for Expedition 33 as it currently boasts 436 awards, while Elden Ring has garnered 435, with potential for additional accolades still in sight.
Industry Perspectives on the Competition
Respected game developer Rich Vogel, who we spoke to recently about the MMORPG landscape in Western markets, expressed his mixed feelings regarding this achievement in a LinkedIn post. While he acknowledges Expedition 33 as a quality game, he remains uncertain about its superiority over Elden Ring, citing its magnificent open-world design as a standout feature.
Vogel’s Take on Game Design
“I am very happy that Expedition has been honored with so many awards. It is a really good game. It is hard for me to accept that Expedition 33 is a better game than Elden Ring. I had more fun playing Elden Ring. The open-world design was brilliant. I like that it did not force you down paths like Skyrim and gave you the freedom to go anywhere in the world. You started out being hunted and became the hunter.”
A Closer Look at Game Elements
Another industry voice, Street, has labeled Expedition 33 a ‘masterpiece’, while also pointing out that its emotional narrative allows players to overlook certain shortcomings, particularly in level design. Street argues that the engaging story and characters might be clouding players’ judgments regarding other critical gameplay features.
Replayability and Player Experience
Reflecting on personal experience, Street mentioned, “I imagine I will play Expedition 33 once or twice more in my lifetime, which is typical for single-player RPGs for me. I predict I will revisit Elden Ring ten times or more. The replayability potential between the two is hard to compare.”He emphasizes that while Expedition 33 is definitely a significant achievement, the deeper engagement found in Elden Ring tends to resonate more strongly with players.
Understanding Game Awards and Competition
The surge in awards for Expedition 33 does not inherently deem it superior to Elden Ring. As Vogel points out, FromSoftware’s title faced intense competition, notably with Sony Santa Monica’s God of War Ragnarök, which also secured a fair share of Game of the Year accolades.
