Since its introduction in Windows 8, Windows 11 God Mode has remained a staple on my desktop for one compelling reason: it is incredibly effective. This single folder presents all Windows Control Panel settings in an easily searchable format. Despite expectations that Windows 11 would eliminate the need for it, I find myself opening God Mode regularly, four years later.
Consistently Embracing God Mode
Many users encounter God Mode only once, viewing it as an interesting feature before moving on. However, I’ve made it an integral part of my computing routine, thanks to its persistent functionality.
Upon opening the folder, users gain instant access to a comprehensive, searchable overview of every Control Panel applet and administrative tool available in Windows. From Device Manager and BitLocker to sound properties and power plans, all essential features are consolidated. This eliminates the hassle of navigating through complex nested menus or remembering which application contains which setting.
I initially believed that with the launch of Windows 11, I would gradually phase out my use of God Mode. The new Settings app appeared modern and user-friendly, and it seemed Microsoft was committed to replacing the old Control Panel entirely. Yet, that hasn’t transpired. In fact, I find myself relying on God Mode even more today. It stands as one of the oldest, yet most valuable features that Windows offers.
Windows 11’s Unfinished Transition
For years, Microsoft has aimed to transition settings from Control Panel into the sleek Settings app, creating a unified user experience. The objective is clear: to phase out the outdated system, consolidating everything under one platform while ensuring a consistent user interface. However, as of March 2026, this shift remains a work in progress.
In practice, navigating Windows 11 often requires switching between the Settings app and the Control Panel. For example, while attempting to open advanced power settings, users start within Settings but often get redirected to an older Control Panel window to complete their task.
This scenario frequently occurs with advanced power settings. Although users can access power options in Settings, detailed controls still redirect to the legacy interface. The same occurs when managing environment variables, where users navigate various pages before reaching a dialog that has remained unchanged since the Windows XP era.
Additionally, File Explorer options—including toggling file extensions—are not available in Settings. Users must access the Control Panel to find these options, which defeats the purpose of the new Settings app that was designed to streamline access.
Even tools for managing BitLocker and system recovery still depend on the older panels. Various advanced system settings—such as multi-boot configurations, User Account Control (UAC) settings, Device Manager features, and performance options—continue to suffer the same fate.
This situation reflects a gradual evolution rather than a failure. The complexities of certain settings have made them more challenging to migrate, resulting in a hybrid system that appears unified but operates on two separate levels. God Mode circumvents this complexity, allowing users to bypass the layers altogether.
Eliminating Guesswork
The actual challenge lies not in the number of clicks needed but in the uncertainty about where features are located. Users often second-guess whether a particular feature still exists within Settings or if it has been relocated. God Mode effectively eliminates this confusion. Simply open the folder, enter your desired term, and you’re immediately directed to the right setting.
For instance, when I configure a new tool or update a development environment, accessing environment variables through the Settings app involves a series of steps: System → About → Advanced System Settings → Environment Variables.
This path requires four clicks to reach a dialog that still resembles Windows XP. However, in God Mode, typing environment leads me directly to it in a single step.
The same applies to Advanced Power settings. A quick search for power reveals all available options at a glance, allowing for immediate access.
God Mode complements tools like PowerToys Command Palette, which manages applications and quick actions efficiently. Together, they minimize the need to utilize the taskbar’s search function.
Over time, the use of God Mode transforms your Windows experience. While increased speed is certainly a benefit, the real value lies in the elimination of mental overhead. Users no longer ponder the locations of features; they navigate seamlessly, effectively transcending the dual-system challenge.
Easy Setup in Under a Minute
To set up God Mode, simply right-click on your desktop, select New, and then choose Folder. Rename this new folder to the following:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Press Enter. The folder icon will transform into a Control Panel icon. Access it to reveal the complete list of settings available.
This solution is compatible with both Windows 11 Home and Pro editions, and does not require administrative privileges. For those interested, a comprehensive God Mode setup guide is readily available.
While advancements to the Windows 11 Settings app are evident, it remains a work in progress. Numerous advanced settings still exist outside the main app. Until this changes, Windows 11 God Mode will continue to be an essential tool on my PC, offering the simplest means to access various settings without the hassle of remembering their locations.
