Google Expands Play Games Service Ahead of GDC 2023
As we approach this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC), Google has revealed exciting updates for its cross-platform gaming service, Google Play Games. One of the most significant announcements is the integration of more Android games designed for PC users, further bridging the gap between mobile and desktop gaming.
Streamlined Access for Developers
According to a blog post by Aurash Mahbod, General Manager and VP of Games on Google Play, every mobile game will now default to be accessible for PC users via Google Play Games. Developers retain the choice to opt out, ensuring flexibility in how their titles are displayed across platforms.
Introducing Playability Badges
To enhance user experience, Google is rolling out a new system of playability badges that will influence game visibility on the platform. These badges provide essential insights:
- Optimized: Games that meet Google’s high standards for top-tier gaming performance.
- Playable: Games that fulfill basic operational requirements.
- Untested: Titles not formally reviewed by Google, but still potentially playable; they will surface in search results only.

Expanding the Catalog
The expansion of Google Play Games also encompasses a broader range of devices, including support for AMD laptops and desktops. Several highly anticipated titles are set to debut this year, featuring popular games like Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, Sonic Rumble, and ODIN: VALHALLA RISING.
Mobile Titles Making Their Way to PC
Additionally, mobile gaming enthusiasts can look forward to familiar titles like Train Sim and Pet Shop Fever: Animal Hotel making their way to PC through Google Play Games. Conversely, PC-focused games such as DREDGE and TABS Mobile will transition to mobile platforms, alongside the much-anticipated mystery game, Disco Elysium, set to release later this year.
New Features Enhance User Experience
Google is not stopping at just titles; the platform will soon feature enhanced functionalities. A new game sidebar, launching this month, will empower players to make swift in-game adjustments while supporting multi-account and multi-instance gameplay.

Moreover, players will now benefit from customizable controls, allowing them to remap keyboard keys or utilize an on-screen joystick. The platform is also simplifying the management of Google Play points, offering up to 10x points boosters, thus enhancing the incentive for both mobile and PC gaming.
Looking Ahead
The beta version of Google Play Games on PC was initially announced during The Game Awards in 2021 and became accessible for Windows users shortly after. Google aims to transition from beta to full launch later this year, promising an even richer gaming experience for users across platforms.
