Google Explains The Reason Behind 7 Years Of Pixel Updates

Over the years, there have been significant advancements in software updates for smartphones. In the past, receiving an updated version of Android for your smartphone was seen as a luxury. However, Google has changed the game by guaranteeing 7 years of Android updates for its Pixel 8 and 8 Pro – a feat that was previously unheard of. But how does Google manage to provide such long-term updates for its new smartphones?

In a recent episode of the Made by Google podcast, Seang Chau, Google’s VP of Devices and Services Software, revealed that the company has established labs specifically for testing Android on their Pixel smartphones with the Tensor SoC. Along with this, they rely on a team of beta testers who assist in identifying and reporting any issues or bugs, as well as providing suggestions for improving the operating system.

According to Seang, the reason for 7 years of updates is based on data from Google which shows that many individuals continue to use their Pixel smartphones for longer than 4 to 5 years. Furthermore, those who choose to sell their Pixel devices or pass them down to family members also factor into this decision.

To guarantee that these users fully benefit from their Pixel smartphone, Google has implemented a 7-year update policy and introduced exclusive feature drops for Pixel users. This strategy not only helps Google maintain its Pixel user base, but also allows them to stay ahead of competitors in the ongoing update battle.

The advantages of long update support are numerous. The Pixel 8 series is fortunate to have years of update support, ensuring that the device will remain current with new and upcoming features for the next seven years.

Google has announced that Gemini Nano, its AI tool, will be introduced to the base Pixel 8. Seang confirmed that this functionality will soon be accessible on Pixel 8 devices, however, it will not be included in the developer options menu. This way, only users who are familiar with its use will be able to utilize this AI tool.
