Google’s Gemini AI to Integrate with Android Apps by July 2025

In a recent communication to users, Google announced that its Gemini AI will undergo significant changes starting July 7, 2025. This update allows Gemini to connect with popular Android applications such as WhatsApp, Messages, and Phone. This information comes from Tuta, highlighting that the new integration will apply regardless of whether users have opted out of Gemini Apps Activity in their settings.

Enhanced Functionality for Gemini Users

For those who choose to keep Gemini’s features enabled, the AI will gain the capability to perform actions like sending messages or making phone calls through these applications. Notably, an official help page is already available. It provides guidance on using the new features, while clarifying the limitations of Gemini’s interactions with WhatsApp.

Limitations in Gemini’s Integration

Despite these advancements, Google has specified certain restrictions on what Gemini can do within WhatsApp. According to the update, the AI will not be able to:

  • Read or summarize WhatsApp messages
  • Add or access images, GIFs, or memes in conversations
  • Include or play audio or video files in messages
  • Read or respond to WhatsApp notifications

However, it’s important to note that even if users disable WhatsApp functionality in Gemini, the mobile app may still support some features through Google Assistant or the Utilities app.

Managing Gemini’s Permissions

If you wish to restrict Gemini’s access on your Android device, you can navigate to the Gemini app, then go to Profile > Apps, where you can toggle off individual app extensions. Additionally, turning off Gemini Apps Activity can be accomplished through Profile settings within Gemini. Even so, it’s still uncertain whether this will fully prevent Gemini from accessing WhatsApp in light of the upcoming changes.

Data Retention and User Privacy

Even with Gemini Apps Activity deactivated, Google plans to retain user activity data for up to 72 hours. This practice is part of their efforts to ensure security, safety, and to gather feedback from users.

A Broader Trend in Technology Updates

This move by Google reflects a wider trend among technology giants, who often implement changes to their terms and automatically opt-in users for new features without explicit consent. For instance, Meta recently introduced its Meta AI in WhatsApp without providing a clear opt-out option.

The Road Ahead for Gemini Users

As the rollout date approaches, many users may remain unaware of this integration unless Google communicates the changes effectively within Gemini. Even with explicit notifications, managing WhatsApp access may prove to be perplexing for some users.
