Gears 6 Might Appear at Xbox Showcase, ‘People Aren’t Ready’ for How Good It Looks

Despite the release of the last game in the franchise being five years ago, Gears 6 is still not confirmed. However, according to recent rumors, this may change in the near future.

During the most recent episode of the Kinda Funny Xcast, Jeff Grubb stated:

From what I’ve been hearing, there are rumors of things happening with Gears 6 this summer. Based on that, the tease seems accurate and aligned with our expectations.

Today, Nate Najda, a well-respected figure in the industry and commonly referred to as shinobi602, also shared a post from the ResetEra forum discussing the impressive new screenshots of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and added the following comment:

Just wait until Gears 6 is released. People are not prepared for it yet.

The first triple-A studio to switch to Unreal Engine 5 in May 2021 was The Coalition, known for their work on Gears. Only a few months later, they unveiled their Xbox Series X demo, called Alpha Point, which showcased the impressive capabilities of UE5.

Despite this, we have yet to see any UE5 games from them. This is due to the cancellation of the studio’s side projects, as reported by Grubb in early 2023.

The smaller non-Gears project that The Coalition had been working on has been canceled. As previously reported, The Coalition had planned to work on this project before moving on to Gears 6 in order to familiarize themselves with Unreal Engine 5. However, they have now decided to focus solely on Gears 6 after feeling confident in their abilities due to their work on The Matrix demo. Along with the cancellation of the smaller project, another project has also been scrapped, resulting in layoffs at Microsoft, including some at The Coalition. The studio will now be fully dedicated to the development of Gears 6.

Rest assured, even if the next installment of Gears were to be hinted at during this year’s Xbox Showcase (scheduled to air on Sunday, June 9), its release date would most likely be in late 2025 at the soonest. It should also be noted that The Coalition is currently occupied with the development of both a Netflix live action film and an animated series based on the franchise.
