‘Friendship’ Review: Tim Robinson Discovers Why You Shouldn’t Befriend Paul Rudd in This Hilariously Bizarre Comedy

While you might think befriending someone like Paul Rudd sounds appealing, the dynamics in the new A24 film *Friendship* may change your mind—especially when it comes to the character Austin, played by Rudd.

The story revolves around Craig, portrayed by Tim Robinson, who takes a package to his new neighbors. Austin, a recently relocated local weatherman, captivates Craig with their mutual fascination for historical artifacts and the quirky pastime of breaking into buildings via the sewer system. The delightful chemistry between the characters brings to life the unique comedic style that Robinson is celebrated for, under the direction of Andrew DeYoung.

*Friendship* unfolds as a brilliantly absurd narrative that brilliantly balances humor with depth. Craig finds his marriage to Tami (played by Kate Mara) strained, largely due to her continued outings with her ex-boyfriend Devin (Josh Segarra). This tension leads Craig to rely heavily on his friendship with Austin, a situation that inevitably spirals into comedic chaos.

Instead of taking a step back, Craig completely disrupts his own life to delve deeper into the nature of his friendship with Austin, resulting in an onslaught of hilarity that is as engaging as it is bizarre. And let’s face it—who wouldn’t enjoy Paul Rudd sporting a mustache?

True to the spirit of great comedy, *Friendship* is packed with memorable jokes that linger long after the credits roll. One standout moment features Craig hilariously commenting on Austin’s friend in reference to his “busty daughter.” The film maintains a recurring theme of secrets between Craig and Austin, highlighting the tension of their not-so-close relationship. When Conner O’Malley enters the scene, I found myself audibly anticipating the hilarity that ensued.

This film affirms my belief that original comedies can still exist—crafted in a way that is amusing without crossing into offensive territory. Watching Robinson’s character endeavor to be the “cool guy” hoping to foster friendship provides a delightful tension that is undeniably entertaining.

Would I be upset if Paul Rudd decided to end our friendship? Absolutely! However, witnessing the tumultuous relationship between Craig and Austin is shaping up to be one of the most delightful surprises in cinema for 2025. DeYoung’s masterful direction combines with the comedic brilliance of both Rudd and Robinson, rendering this one of the funniest movies I have encountered in recent years.
