Insights from Chris Avellone on the Fallout Franchise
In a recent interview with YouTuber TKs-Mantis, Chris Avellone, the Senior Designer and Writer behind Fallout: New Vegas, delved into various aspects of the beloved Fallout series. Avellone, who also contributed to Fallout 2 and was involved in the ill-fated Van Buren project, made some intriguing claims regarding the status of the game’s source code.
The Source Code Dilemma
Avellone stated that, to his knowledge, Obsidian Entertainment never fully delivered the source code of Fallout: New Vegas to Bethesda. He expressed concerns about Bethesda’s capability to effectively reassemble the code, which presents a significant challenge for any potential remaster of the game.
Concerns About Remastering Capabilities
Avellone remarked, “I don’t think Bethesda has the engineering know-how to make a remaster of Fallout: New Vegas at all.”He elaborated that the final milestone for the game included delivering complete source code and the means to build it, but Bethesda offered only $10, 000 for that milestone.
This situation raises questions about the decision made by Feargus Urquhart, Obsidian’s CEO, who opted not to pursue that milestone payment. Avellone speculated that this might have been a strategic choice, especially if the New Vegas experience had previously affected the financials for Urquhart.
The Implications of Missing Code
While Avellone did not claim that Bethesda lacks any source code for New Vegas entirely, he emphasized that various individuals he spoke with after that period had no idea how to piece it back together. This absence of knowledge poses a significant obstacle for any future projects involving the game.
Rumors of a Remaster
The conversation about a potential remaster of Fallout: New Vegas reignited in November 2025, sparked by Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who reported that such a project was seemingly in progress alongside a remaster of Fallout 3, which is expected to arrive first. More recently, the studio Iron Galaxy stirred discussions by sharing an iconic image of the game, although they quickly clarified it wasn’t linked to New Vegas.
Avellone’s Personal Take
As a side note, Avellone also expressed his views on the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of Fallout, mentioning that he wasn’t particularly fond of the series, largely due to its scriptwriting choices.
As the gaming community awaits further developments, it remains to be seen whether Avellone’s insights hold true and if Bethesda will face challenges in delivering a loyal remaster of Fallout: New Vegas.
