Fact Check: Is Kiefer Sutherland Returning in 24 Dark Horizon? Viral Poster Clarified
The Facebook page YODY BBY ABY recently shared what appears to be a promotional image for a supposed new installment in the 24 franchise titled 24 Dark Horizon. The post claims that Kiefer Sutherland will reprise his role as Jack Bauer, accompanied by the following message:
“EXCITING NEWS ABOUT 24!! KIEFER SUTHERLAND IS BACK!!! Kiefer Sutherland returns as Jack Bauer in 24 Dark Horizon, an exhilarating new 24-episode series premiering on Hulu and Fox in December 2024.”
However, further investigation into the Facebook page indicates that this poster is a work of satire and not genuine news, meaning that the announcement regarding 24 Dark Horizon is false. The page’s description states:
“I’m here to eat frogs, lift rocks, and engage in satire. This page is 100% satire and fake news.”
The 24 series is an action-drama featuring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, an agent with the Counter Terrorism Unit who employs unconventional and often ruthless tactics to tackle threats against the United States. The original show aired for nine seasons from 2002 to 2014.
24 Dark Horizon: A Hoax Dispelling the Claims of the Facebook Page
The announcement of 24 Dark Horizon by YODY BBY ABY is indeed fabrication, which becomes clear upon reviewing the page’s bio and its other posts known for their satirical nature. For instance, one post humorously suggests that Wyatt Russell, son of actor Kurt Russell, will become Snake Plissken in a fictional sequel to John Carpenter’s Escape from Earth, claiming it depicts Snake forming a tenuous alliance with aliens from Area 51.
Another satirical entry amusingly proposes a sequel to the film Gone in 60 Seconds, cheekily titled Gone in 60 Nanoseconds, announcing that Nicolas Cage will return as the car thief Memphis.
Although the YODY BBY ABY Facebook page clearly identifies itself as a source of satire and fake news, such posts can easily be misinterpreted and shared out of context, potentially resulting in the spread of false information. Consequently, followers should remain vigilant and not take such rumors at face value.
A Landmark in Television History: 24 Series
The rapid spread of the unfounded rumor regarding 24 Dark Horizon isn’t particularly startling, considering the original 24 series’ lasting appeal and cultural impact. The narrative centered around CTU agent Jack Bauer premiered during a critical moment in American history, coinciding with the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
During a time when the American public was on high alert, the counter-terrorism theme of 24 resonated profoundly. The show explored various facets of terrorism, alongside Jack Bauer’s morally ambiguous decisions as an operative.
Airing for over a decade, the first eight seasons of 24 spanned from 2002 to 2010. Though Season 8 was intended to be the final season, a four-year hiatus was followed by the limited event series 24: Live Another Day, which aired 12 episodes—half the length of a traditional season. Since then, Bauer has not been featured in any new television episodes, though a spin-off named 24: Legacy did air for one season before being canceled.
Beyond its poignant themes surrounding terrorism, 24 is acclaimed for its innovative real-time storytelling approach, providing a narrative structure where each episode aligns with one hour, thereby creating a seamless 24-episode season that represents a full day.
In conclusion, 24 Dark Horizon is merely a fictitious rumor propagated by a satirical Facebook page. Nevertheless, fans of the original series can still enjoy all episodes of 24 on Hulu and Disney Plus.
