Microsoft Expands Xbox Full Screen Experience to Windows 11 Handhelds and PCs

Following its initial launch on ROG Xbox Ally devices, Microsoft is excited to announce the rollout of the Xbox Full Screen Experience to all handheld devices running Windows 11. This innovative user interface delivers a console-like feel while optimizing performance, enhancing the gaming landscape for players everywhere.

As of today, November 21, the latest Windows Insider Preview Build 26220.7221 is now available for users in the Dev and Beta channels. This update allows Insider community members to try out the Full Screen Experience—a significant shift from the previous requirement of manually enabling the feature.

“Designed for controller-first navigation, it provides a gaming-first, full-screen environment where players can easily browse and launch titles from across their game libraries, including most popular PC storefronts, ”stated Senior Technical Program Manager, Cassie Chou, while discussing the new feature.

The Task Switcher function has been enhanced to facilitate swift transitions between games and applications, ensuring a truly seamless experience for users. Once the Xbox app is installed from the Microsoft Store, users with the update can switch to the new full-screen mode via the Task View, accessed from the taskbar icon or by pressing Windows + Tab.

There are additional methods to enter the Xbox mode: users can navigate through the Game Bar settings or simply hit the Windows + F11 keys. Leaving this mode is also straightforward, with options available through the Task View, Game Bar, or Windows key—no reboot required. Furthermore, users can disable this entire gaming mode via Windows Settings.

As with its other features, Microsoft welcomes user feedback on this desktop adaptation of the Xbox Full Screen Experience. Insiders can easily submit their insights by pressing Windows + F, which opens the Feedback Hub where they can select the Full Screen Experience category.

Stay tuned as Microsoft continues to refine and enhance the gaming experience on Windows 11—paving the way for a more integrated gaming environment for players across various platforms.
