Ethan Slater Discusses Initial Challenges in His Relationship with Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s romantic involvement began shortly after their respective divorces, with Grande parting ways with Dalton Gomez and Slater ending his marriage to high school sweetheart Lilly Jay. Unsurprisingly, their new relationship sparked considerable speculation on social media, prompting Slater to reflect on the challenges they faced during those tumultuous times.

In an October 30, 2024, interview with GQ, Slater described the difficulties of having his relationship with Grande subject to public discourse, stating:

“I think there was something that was really difficult about things in your private life being commented on and looked at by the public.”

He mentioned the array of significant changes occurring in both of their lives at that time, adding that online commentary about their relationship only exacerbated the situation. Slater elaborated:

“There were a lot of big changes in private lives that were really happening, so it’s really hard to see people who don’t know anything about what’s happening commenting on it.”

During her interview with Vanity Fair in September, Ariana Grande expressed similar sentiments. The star of Wicked came to her boyfriend’s defense, asserting that “there couldn’t be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him.”

In addition to discussing the trials of his relationship with Ariana Grande, Slater shared with GQ that their first year together has been a genuinely “beautiful”experience. Both actors will be starring in the much-anticipated film adaptation of Wicked, in which Grande plays Glinda, the Good Witch, and Slater takes on the role of Boq. He expressed his excitement by saying:

“It was an amazing year and a really beautiful thing, and I’m just really excited. I’m really, really proud of Ari and the work she’s done on this. She’s poured herself into it.”

Slater conveyed how thrilled he is to be part of this project. Their mutual support for one another is evident; in her Vanity Fair interview, Grande praised Slater, claiming that “there is no one on this earth with a better heart”than him.

Before his conversation with GQ, Slater shared a video of Grande performing her song “Imperfect for You”from her album Eternal Sunshine on his Instagram Story. During the interview, he celebrated his girlfriend’s immense talent, stating:

“She’s such an incredible performer, and I think everyone knows how good she is [as] a recording artist and all that.”

While Ariana is known for her incredible vocal abilities, Slater emphasized that it’s her songwriting prowess that truly impresses him. He also mentioned that they share a common interest in songwriting, even if their styles differ. Grande’s writing credits feature hits like “7 Rings”and “Dangerous Woman,”along with contributions to artists such as BLACKPINK’s “Ice Cream”and The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears (Remix).”

On the other hand, Slater described songwriting as a personal hobby and an essential form of expression for him.

The film adaptation of Wicked, featuring Ethan Slater and Ariana Grande, is set to premiere in theaters across the United States on November 22, 2024.
