Essential Steps for Optimizing an SSD in Windows: 13 Must-Do Tips

When it comes to maximizing the performance of solid-state drives (SSDs) on Windows, the operating system offers several features. However, many of these aren’t activated by default. By taking the right steps, you can significantly prolong your SSD’s lifespan and enhance your overall computing experience. Here’s how you can optimize your SSD effectively.

1. Disable Fast Startup

Although it may seem counterproductive, disabling Fast Startup can benefit SSDs. While designed to expedite boot times, its advantages may be minimal with modern SSDs, where a clean reboot can actually enhance performance. Furthermore, Fast Startup can hinder access to your Windows drive in dual-boot scenarios.

To turn off Fast Startup, navigate to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable to enable adjustments, then uncheck the Turn on fast startup option.

2. Update SSD Firmware

To enable AHCI, access the BIOS settings during your computer’s startup. The location and naming of the option can vary, so you might need to explore your BIOS menu. For newly built systems, AHCI is often enabled by default, particularly for those with SSDs.

Traditional defragmentation is often viewed as detrimental to SSDs, but modern versions of Windows automatically recognize SSDs and employ an “optimization” routine instead. This process includes retrimming your SSD, enhancing its performance and longevity.

To manage this setting, go to Start, search for defrag, and select Defragment and Optimize Drives. Ensure Scheduled optimization is activated for your SSD. Avoid third-party defrag tools, as they may not be fully compatible with SSD technology.

7. Configure Write Caching

User-level write caching can have mixed effects on SSD performance. To determine its impact, you can disable it through Windows settings and observe any performance changes. Right-click the Windows button, choose Device Manager, expand Disk drives, right-click on your SSD, select Properties, and navigate to the Policies tab.
