Doom: The Dark Ages Preview – A Unique DOOM Experience

Anticipating DOOM: The Dark Ages – A Review of Gameplay Insights

In 2016, the unexpected resurgence of DOOM captured gaming enthusiasts by surprise. Despite Bethesda’s decision to withhold reviews prior to launch and initial concerns arising from a lackluster multiplayer beta, the game exceeded all expectations. Following this triumph, the sequel, DOOM Eternal, also received acclaim, paving the way for the upcoming title, DOOM: The Dark Ages.

DOOM: The Dark Ages Gameplay

First Impressions from Frankfurt

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience the initial levels of DOOM: The Dark Ages during a hands-on event held in Frankfurt. During my playtime, I navigated the first level and glimpsed two later levels, allowing me to understand the game’s offerings and diversity.

Reflecting on DOOM Eternal, I noted a shift towards more platforming elements, which, while not overwhelming, did detract slightly from the action’s purity. It appears that ID Software took player feedback into account, as the contemporary build of DOOM: The Dark Ages has scaled back its platform-heavy aspects while preserving verticality.

Returning to Core DOOM Mechanics

The first level I explored retained the essence of DOOM’s core gameplay. Massive maps filled with secrets invite exploration, allowing players to discover additional health and armor amidst intense combat sequences. Transitioning between expansive arenas populated with enemies and connecting corridors reflects the franchise’s signature formula.

New Gameplay Mechanics: DOOM Guy Gundam and Dragon Flight

As I delved into further levels, the gameplay evolved with novel mechanics. One exhilarating experience involved controlling a large mechanized suit reminiscent of a Gundam, which allowed me to engage titans through thrilling combat scenarios. This mechanized perspective injected fresh energy into the familiar DOOM gameplay.

Equally thrilling, but with a different pace, was the moment I took to the skies atop a dragon with mechanized wings and weaponry. The initial experience of soaring out from a cave and engaging in combat against formidable hell-ships was visually stunning, showcasing the game’s ability to create a sense of scale and chaos.

However, I found the dragon’s combat controls to be somewhat stiff, especially once locked on to targets. While the aerial battles were captivating, I look forward to further refining my skills in subsequent gameplay sessions.

Expansive Open-World Elements

One standout experience came during an open battlefield segment that deviated from classic DOOM’s linearity. This area allowed for a sense of exploration and strategy as players could choose their path, tackle enemies in various sequences, and discover hidden secrets.

Coupled with the fast-paced combat mechanics from DOOM Eternal, where players gain health and ammunition from finishing off enemies, this approach enhances the experience. Utilizing new weapons, such as a shield saw, I felt invigorated by the combination of high-octane action and tactical gameplay.

A Narrative Driven Experience

The narrative focus of DOOM: The Dark Ages promises a compelling single-player experience. Free from the constraints of multiplayer balancing, the story centers on the DOOM Slayer’s origins and encounters within a medieval-inspired universe—a context I find particularly engaging.

Release Date and Looking Ahead

DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to launch on May 13, 2025, for premium edition buyers, followed by a wider release on May 15. Given the positive reception of both DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal, as well as my enriching gameplay experience in Frankfurt, I eagerly anticipate the full release and the next chapter in this exhilarating franchise.
