How to Install the Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing Mod Now Available in Public Beta

Recently, we showcased some stunning visuals from the in-progress Dark Souls 2 path tracing modification called “Lighting Engine”. Now, modder Ganaboy has made a beta version available for public download via the DSLighting Engine Discord channel.

This latest build implements path tracing technology while significantly reducing the game’s default “fake lights.”The creator suggests minimizing the use of player light sources; crucial light mechanics, such as torches, are essential in the early game, and players should maintain timers wherever possible when not directly needed. The mod features minimal post-processing since the path tracing mode is designed to gather as much light as possible from the game’s darker regions.

Furthermore, Ganaboy has expertly reconfigured area lighting within each zone. The mod aims to ensure that players won’t require a torch in well-lit locations, even inside structures with open windows or doors. This innovative approach captures every opening, embodying the true essence of path tracing.

Additionally, the new version now natively supports HDR, a feature absent from the original game. For those concerned with anti-aliasing, the mod author recommends using either NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR 4 over traditional SMAA. It’s worth noting that the mod operates at your monitor’s full resolution, bypassing the game’s default resolution settings, and requires the Flip model swapchain to enable upscaling functionality.

Installation and Setup Guide for the Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing Mod

To experience this path tracing mod, ensure you meet the following requirements:

  • Windows 11 operating system is essential due to the necessity of Shader Model 6.6 for proper functionality.
  • A legitimate copy of Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, specifically the Steam version, is required (note that the vanilla game won’t suffice).
  • An RT-capable graphics card such as NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2000 series or an equivalent from AMD or Intel.

To install the mod:

  • Create a backup of the shader folder found in the game’s default directory, typically located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin\Game.
  • Transfer the shader folder along with the ds2le_atmosphere_presets folder, dxgi.dll, nvngx_dlss.dll, nvngx_dlssd.dll, and nvngx_dlssg.dll to the same directory mentioned above.
  • Within the in-game settings, enable all options except for antialiasing and camera motion blur.

The mod’s settings also allow for enhanced visuals by selecting Hardware Ray Traced Sun Shadows instead of the standard PCSS. Additionally, installing texture mods is permitted, just ensure they are designed specifically for the Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing mod to prevent display issues.

Lastly, Ganaboy advises against using the Lighting Engine’s FrameLimiter feature, which has been deprecated. Instead, he recommends utilizing emoose’s DS2FrameUnlimiter for optimal performance.
