Crimson Desert Patch 1.04: A Comprehensive Update Overview
In a notable development for gaming enthusiasts, Pearl Abyss has officially rolled out patch 1.04 for Crimson Desert across a majority of platforms, with Mac users expected to receive it later. This update largely incorporates the improvements and features outlined in the recent roadmap announcement, with the exception of the much-anticipated boss rematches, which will be included in a future update.
New Difficulty Modes Enhance Gameplay
This patch introduces three distinct difficulty settings available in Settings > Play: Easy, Normal, and Hard. The Easy mode offers players reduced damage intake and lowers enemy stats while giving more generous Parry/Dodge windows. The existing gameplay remains unchanged in the Normal setting. Conversely, the Hard difficulty introduces significant changes: food effects are felt only after completing the full consumption animation, foes inflict more damage and are quicker on their feet, and both Parry/Dodge windows are tightened. Moreover, new attack patterns await certain bosses.
Combat Enhancements and Tweaks
Players will notice several adjustments to combat mechanics. Bosses can now be hit during their powerful attack animations, enhancing engagement opportunities. Additionally, the frequency at which bosses counterattack and escape has been recalibrated. Follow-up attacks ensure quicker connections even when the initial strike is blocked. While elemental status ailment damage sees an increase, environmental damage from objects like pillars and trees has been slightly diminished. Furthermore, equipment reinforcement via grindstones and anvils will now yield lower attack and defense boosts. The Blinding Flash skill has received adjustments that enable usage in non-weapon-drawing zones and targets enemies directly in front of the player.
Expanded Character Skills and Weaponry
All playable characters are set to experience an upgrade with the introduction of new skills and weapons:
- Damiane gains the exclusive one-handed Sword of Starlight as a quest reward.
- Kliff and Oongka can now wield the Tree Branch and Sturdy Tree Branch, obtained through tree or bamboo cutting.
- Kliff receives a new Weapon Throw skill that allows for retrieval of thrown weapons.
- Damiane and Oongka have access to the newly added Ambush skill and an equivalent of the Focused Force Palm.
- Force Palm Pulse can now charge up to three levels for increased damage.
- Oongka’s blaster can be fired mid-Flight.
Control Customization and User Experience Improvements
The control system has been refined with new presets that accommodate both keyboard/mouse and controller users, maintaining the original layout under the “Classic Preset.”A new Evasion Control option allows players to select between double-tap or hold input methods for dodging. The Vault mechanic is now streamlined to trigger only when jumping during an attack while Dismount/Drop and Cancel inputs have been consolidated. Opening the Map has been simplified to pressing the DualSense touchpad or the Xbox View button.
User Interface Overhaul
Patch 1.04 brings substantial enhancements to the user interface. The Inventory now features organized category tabs—All, Documents, Equipment, Food, Materials, and Others—with sort settings saved individually per category. The introduction of new Map filters and search functions streamlines navigation; players will now see Memory Fragment icons on maps post-collection, along with cardinal direction indicators on the minimap (N, S, E, W).Shop pages now display quantities of owned items, and Journal entries provide detailed descriptions of reward items.
Housing, Storage, and Pet Features Revamped
The Housing and Storage systems have undergone a substantial transformation. The newly introduced Sturdy Gatherables Chest accommodates 1, 000 slots for materials while allowing crafting and refinement without occupying inventory space. Additionally, the Collectibles Chest features 1, 000 slots specifically for quest items and crafting recipes. The Kuku Cooler and its enhanced counterpart provide slots for food and cooking ingredients. Players can now select preferred house layouts (Compact, Standard, Spacious, Spacious Pailunese) based on camp expansion levels, and furniture can be retrieved en masse.
Pet lovers also benefit from exciting updates, including the ability to “recruit”birds as pets through the new Sotdae of Bond item, which enhances Trust when fed. Five new cat variations have been added, along with the Sigil of Bonding that enables cats to remain on the player’s shoulder longer. A new pet accessory slot allows for diverse roles, and both horses and pets are now eligible for renaming, with a hidden pet equipment shop introduced in Pororin.
Technical Enhancements and Accessibility Features
Pearl Abyss has significantly upgraded the quality of distant object and texture rendering, enhancing scalability with graphics settings. Improvements include better character visual fidelity at longer distances and refined hair lighting in shaded areas. AMD FSR Ray Regeneration and Intel XeSS 3.0 upscaling and frame generation have also seen enhancements. Additionally, the update introduces new accessibility options: Colorblind Mode, Chromatic Aberration toggle, and Photosensitive Mode.
Game Performance and Commercial Success
In its remarkable journey, Crimson Desert has surpassed the milestone of five million sales in under a month since its launch. However, it is noteworthy that the game did not achieve a spot in the Top 10 best-selling games in the United States for March.
