“Credit to my dad, probably smartest guy I know” – Emma Navarro hails billionaire father Ben; discloses how Charleston Open owner shaped her mindset

Emma Navarro recently discussed the impact of her father, Ben Navarro, on her mindset. Ben Navarro, who is a billionaire and also the proprietor of the Charleston Open, has played a significant role in shaping her thinking.

The American, seeded 10th, is currently participating in the 2024 Charleston Open. She began her journey with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win against her compatriot and qualifier, Katie Volynets, in the second round.

After defeating Volynets, Emma Navarro spoke with Steve Weissman on Tennis Channel, who inquired about her mindset. She credited her father, Ben, whom she regards as the “smartest guy”she knows, for instilling in her a strong and resolute mentality.

Navarro disclosed that her father had instructed a mindset course at the College of Charleston that was highly sought after, with students still vying for a spot in the class.

“I got to give a lot of credit to my dad. He’s probably the smartest guy I know and he’s dropped a lot of knowledge and wisdom on my siblings and I over the years. He actually taught a class last semester at College of Charleston on mindset and, yeah, just being intentional to name the class was intentionality,”Navarro said (at 2:40).

The 20th ranked player in the world revealed that her father had instilled in her the importance of maintaining perspective and had imparted valuable on-court lessons. She also acknowledged her coach, Peter Ayers, crediting him for shaping her mindset. Navarro spoke highly of both Ben and Ayers, describing them as exceptionally intelligent individuals who have imparted a wealth of knowledge to her.

“It was a really competitive class. Kids were emailing him throughout this semester trying to get in, but yeah, he’s taught me a bunch about, you know, the perspective that I want to take into things, especially, on court stuff. Then my coach as well, just teaches me a lot about mindset and, yeah, like I said, the perspective I want to have so, yeah, two really smart guys that teach me a lot,”she added.

During her press conference after defeating Katie Volynets, Emma Navarro discussed her experience of performing in front of her hometown fans. She shared her joy at playing at her best and described it as a memorable and enjoyable experience to compete in Charleston with her loved ones in attendance.

“Played really well today. Definitely good to, yeah, get the win tonight. And played some good tennis, and, yeah, really fun playing at home in front of the Charleston crowd. And my friends and family are out tonight. So, yeah, definitely special playing at home,”Emma Navarro said.

Navarro credited the supportive energy of the crowd for aiding her in performing exceptionally well and ultimately securing her victory in the match.

“Definitely felt the energy from the crowd, and was a really positive feeling out there tonight. And, yeah, it was cool to be able to get the win on that court, my first win on center court here at Credit One. So it’s pretty cool. Definitely a milestone for me,”she added.

Emma Navarro is set to face off against Romanian player Jaqueline Cristian in the Round of 16 at the 2024 Charleston Open.
