Creating Custom Power Plans in Windows for Every Situation: A Comprehensive Guide

The default power plans in Windows are often too broad, leading users to compromise between performance and battery longevity. To address this issue, I created customizable power setups that cater specifically to my requirements. Here’s how I utilized a free tool to design ideal power plans for varying situations.

Leveraging ThrottleStop for Custom Power Plans

One of the notable limitations of Windows power plans is the lack of fine-tuned control over CPU performance. The CPU not only consumes significant power but also often serves as a bottleneck in system performance, especially affecting GPU capabilities. By gaining precise control over CPU settings, one can drastically enhance energy efficiency, and this is where the ThrottleStop application plays a pivotal role.

While ThrottleStop is widely recognized for its ability to disable power throttling and manage CPU voltage, it is equally effective for creating and managing power profiles. I have personalized four distinct power plans that I can activate based on my current demands. Here’s a succinct overview of critical adjustments that can be made:

  • Power Profile: This setting acts as a shortcut to switch between default Windows profiles and is imperative since ThrottleStop adjustments build on these foundations.
  • Speed Shift EPP: This parameter determines the responsiveness of your PC when toggling between high and low clock speeds. A value of 0 yields maximum performance, while 255 focuses on efficiency.
  • Disable Turbo: Engaging this setting caps your CPU to its base clock speed by disabling Intel’s Turbo Boost, significantly enhancing battery duration while preventing thermal issues, albeit at the cost of some processing power.
  • C1E: This feature puts non-essential CPU components to sleep during idle periods (even brief moments) to conserve energy.

Maximum Performance Profile: Ideal for Gaming and Latency-Sensitive Tasks

This profile is designed for users seeking the utmost performance without concern for power conservation. By eliminating various power-saving functions, we unlock unparalleled PC capabilities.

This plan is not intended for everyday use, even under load, but rather for instances when even minimal latency is unacceptable. For example, I utilize it while playing competitive games, and it also suits other demanding tasks such as live streaming or video editing. Adjust the following settings in ThrottleStop:

Power Profile: Select High Performance Speed Shift EPP: Set to 0 Disable Turbo: Unchecked C1E: Unchecked

Ensure all other options remain at their defaults, and click the Save button upon completion.

Performance Profile: Optimal for Work and Daily Operations

When connected to AC power and looking to harness the full capabilities of your CPU while also conserving energy, this profile is ideal. It allows your computer to deliver peak performance for demanding applications while maintaining low power consumption during idle or light tasks.

This setup serves as the default for most activities when plugged in, including gaming, where minor latencies can be tolerated. To implement this in ThrottleStop, click on one of the white dots atop the interface and make these adjustments:

Power Profile: Select Balanced Speed Shift EPP: Set to 80 (or 128 for further power savings) Disable Turbo: Unchecked C1E: Checked

Battery Power Profile: Extending Battery Life

For mobile users or those wishing to limit power usage while performing basic tasks, this custom power plan provides sufficient performance for web browsing, video streaming, and light gaming without excessively draining the battery.

When the primary goal is to keep your device operational for as long as possible, this power plan significantly limits performance to minimize energy consumption. While it allows for basic tasks like document editing and web browsing, users should expect delays.

Lowest Power Profile in ThrottleStop

Additionally, lowering the screen brightness can further conserve battery life, as the display is often a major consumer of power.

These power profiles are effective only while ThrottleStop is actively running, so it’s advisable to configure it to launch with Windows. Beyond these profiles, consider exploring CPU and GPU undervolting to enhance performance without a significant power increase.
