Windows 11 Bug Disguises Password Sign-In Button – Microsoft’s Solution is to Hover and Click the Correct Area

Microsoft has identified a bug in Windows 11 that is causing the disappearance of the “password”icon from the sign-in options, which typically appears during user login. For those utilizing Windows Hello—whether through a PIN or fingerprint recognition—the PIN option is normally visible. However, when trying to access the ‘show sign-in options’ feature, users may find that the ‘password’ option is currently missing due to this known issue.

Although Microsoft has pointed out that the primary PIN input field remains functional, the smaller icon that allows users to switch to password entry—the key icon within the “Sign-in options”—is not displaying as expected. This problem became apparent following updates released in August, September, October, and November.

In a support document highlighted by Windows Latest, Microsoft acknowledged the absence of the password icon at the lock screen. Users who do not engage with Windows Hello will not witness the “Show sign-in options.” For everyone else, this option appears just below the PIN input area.

While tapping the “Show sign-in options”usually reveals the password feature, it is currently missing on a number of systems. Microsoft clarifies that the option itself is not broken; rather, it is invisible. Therefore, by exploring the area below the PIN box, users might eventually activate the display of the password entry field.

Microsoft further explained, “If you hover over the space where the icon should appear, you will detect that the password button is still accessible.” Users can click on this placeholder, enter their password, and proceed to sign in as normal.

While it may feel somewhat frustrating, users are encouraged to explore the vicinity of the PIN area in their search for the password option. For those experiencing continued difficulty in locating it, sporadic clicks on the lock screen may inadvertently trigger the password option. Unfortunately, until Microsoft rolls out a resolution, this workaround appears to be the most viable solution.

Current Challenges with Windows Updates

Given this ongoing issue, one can’t help but question the recent developments within the Windows division. With Pavan Davuluri at the helm of Windows and devices, it is clear the company is striving to maintain its commitment to quality. However, it seems that recent staffing cuts may have compromised the Windows team, resulting in fewer internal testers, which is critical for quality assurance.

This problem extends beyond the login experience. For instance, the October 2025 Update adversely affected Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).Users have reported significant performance drops, particularly with gaming setups. Tests conducted by Windows Latest indicated lower frame rates (FPS) in several games, prompting Nvidia to issue a hotfix to alleviate these performance concerns.
