It’s that exciting time of year again! The Steam Next Fest has returned, bringing with it a plethora of demos for upcoming games. Some of these titles have the potential to become major hits when they officially launch.
As I’ve done in previous years, I’ve combed through a wide array of demos available during the festival and curated a selection of standout games that I highly recommend you check out. It’s important to note that even if you read this list after the festival concludes, many developers choose to keep their demos available for download. So, if something piques your interest, don’t hesitate to visit Steam and see if the demo is still up for grabs. I will highlight any demos that are limited-time offerings as I detail them.
Before diving into the recommendations, I had the opportunity to preview two exciting titles ahead of the festival: Luna Abyss from Kwalee Labs and Zero Parades: From Dead Spies by ZA/UM, the studio behind Disco Elysium. Steam Next Fest – February 2026 Edition
Replaced – Sad Cat Studios – Release Date: April 14, 2026
This demo for Replaced, a visually stunning 2.5D pixel-art platformer from Sad Cat Studios, went live shortly before the festival. If this game has been on your radar, you have likely already tried it. For those unfamiliar, now is the perfect time to wish-list it and download the demo.
The aesthetic of Replaced is captivating, but the gameplay equally impressed me. While I do wish the character movement was slightly quicker, particularly during the introductory mission, I’m optimistic that this will be adjusted in the final game. This title stands out as a promising narrative-driven platformer, making it an exciting addition to the genre.
The Eternal Life of Goldman – Weappy Studio – Release Date: TBD
Another gem worth mentioning is The Eternal Life of Goldman. Its enchanting storybook visuals remind me of Cuphead, making it visually captivating. However, beyond its aesthetic appeal, the game features innovative platforming mechanics that creatively incorporate the protagonist’s cane swaps, promising engaging challenges throughout gameplay.
While the game’s bustling activity might occasionally create visual noise, I hope this will be smoothed out before launch. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly recommend trying out The Eternal Life of Goldman, as it certainly left me excited from my first encounter.
Denshattack! – Undercorders – Release Date: TBD
Denshattack! is another game that, upon first glimpse, feels instantly enticing. Combining elements from OlliOlli and Temple Run, this vibrant and high-speed game lets players take on the role of a racing train, complete with stylish tricks akin to Subway Surfers. Although my initial experience felt somewhat disjointed, this unique premise has me intrigued, and I found myself unable to shake off thoughts of it even after a short demo session.
Planet of Lana II: Children of the Leaf – Wishfully – Release Date: March 5, 2026
Planet of Lana II lives up to my expectations after experiencing the first installment in 2024 on PS5 and PS4. While I appreciated the previous title’s art and characters, it suffered from sluggish pacing. However, the sequel promises a substantial upgrade in terms of puzzle-platforming dynamics, offering varied mechanics expected to create more engaging challenges.
If you loved narrative-driven platformers but found the first game lacking, the demo for Planet of Lana II is a must-try during Steam Next Fest.
Outbound – Square Glade Games – Release Date: Q2 2026
Outbound takes a refreshing approach to the survival-crafting genre. Set during a seemingly endless camping escapade, it allows players to embrace a slower pace, customizing their mobile camper-van while exploring the great outdoors. This game also enables co-op play with up to three friends, adding to its appeal.
The Steam Next Fest demo offers merely a glimpse into the intricacies of the game, and while it embraces a proactive pace, it may feel a bit too slow for some. Nonetheless, I recommend you give it a try if this concept resonates with you.
MOLE – Off Black Creations – Release Date: Q2 2026
MOLE is an engaging psychological horror adventure that quickly establishes its eerie atmosphere. Navigating the depths of darkness creates a relatable sense of fear, enhanced by clever use of lighting to maintain tension and unease.
As familiar as I am with horror games, I remain curious if MOLE can maintain its grip throughout the full gameplay experience. I highly recommend horror enthusiasts check out the demo—its potential is enticing!
GRIDbeat! – Ridiculous Games – Release Date: March 26, 2026
GRIDbeat! is a rhythm-based puzzle game where players navigate grid-based challenges in sync with an engaging soundtrack. The demo showcases a fun gameplay experience with levels that evolve as you progress, keeping the excitement high. This title is certainly one to keep an eye on!
Croak – Woordrunner Games – Release Date: TBD
Croak is another delightful addition to the platformer genre. Utilizing unique mechanics where you launch yourself using a frog’s tongue, it offers a whimsical experience. The character design is charming, and I hope the level design matches this joyfulness. If successful, Croak could become a standout title in 2026.
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss – Big Bad Wolf – Release Date: April 16, 2026
Another intriguing entry in the horror genre is Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. This game combines investigative mechanics with engaging storytelling. I appreciate how it enhances the gaming experience with elements like clue management and spatial sonar detection, creating a uniquely interactive horror scenario.
However, it faces the challenge of balancing horror with puzzle-solving. While I struggled with an initial puzzle, I am hopeful that the developers will skillfully weave horror elements seamlessly throughout the game.
Armastus – Counterplay Games – Release Date: TBD
Lastly, we have Armastus, a third-person roguelike shooter from Counterplay Games. This title draws inspiration from Returnal while embracing the aesthetic of DOOM: The Dark Ages. With its engaging gameplay and promising mechanics, Armastus has immense potential to captivate players in 2026.
