Recently, Bungie hosted an exclusive Marathon hands-on event for Chinese media in Shanghai, marking the first such occasion outside North America. This event unveiled exciting new gameplay footage and insights that have captured the attention of fans globally.
Enhanced Worldbuilding and Narrative Depth
Attendees were particularly impressed by the extensive worldbuilding and narrative enhancements introduced in this iteration of Marathon. The game now offers more detailed tutorials and faction introductions that clearly define the origins and motivations of its playable characters, crafting a cohesive and engaging story framework for this extraction shooter. A significant narrative connection to the original Marathon trilogy is established through Dr. Strauss’s will, a key lore element tying multiple story arcs together.
Challenging PvE Experience
The PvE experience showcased in the latest build of Marathon introduced formidable challenges as AI enemies are reported to call in reinforcements repeatedly. Players must navigate a landscape fraught with environmental dangers, including poison gas vents, perimeter turrets, and landmines. According to early impressions, resource management plays a critical role in gameplay, with medical supplies and shields proving to be costly at in-game vendors. Consequently, participants often found themselves unable to afford essential items without sacrificing buffs accumulated during gameplay.
This high-stakes environment promotes a strategic approach, discouraging players from engaging in early combat or PvP, which typically leads to losses. Instead, it encourages a focus on mission objectives to upgrade essential base statistics. Notably, one confirmed map accommodates 18 players organized into six teams of three, while smaller maps support up to 12 players across four teams.
Visual and Technical Upgrades
Since the Alpha version, Marathon has undergone substantial visual enhancements, offering environments that evoke a darker, more mysterious vibe similar to Bungie’s earlier title, Pathways into Darkness (1993), as well as the original Marathon series. The user interface (UI) has also seen a significant revamp; however, some users noted that certain aspects may require a period of adjustment to master.
Balanced Gameplay and Customization Options
The game showcases balanced skill distribution across all classes, promoting versatile team compositions. Various Shells equipped with movement abilities add a dynamic element to player mobility. Players can customize their characters with six distinct appearances based on their chosen faction.
Extensive Arsenal and Weapon Customization
Marathon features an impressive range of 28 distinct weapons, each boasting two or more skins, with some variants completely altering the weapon’s appearance. Every weapon includes a charm slot and three sticker slots unlocked through in-game challenges. Early feedback indicates that gunplay remains formidable, a testament to Bungie’s longstanding expertise in this area. However, the cosmetic shop and battle pass were not accessible during the event, leaving some features untested.
Event Mechanics and Objectives
For those eager to see the gameplay in action, a 10-minute video is available on Bilibili, showcasing a large-scale PvE event named Lockdown that takes place on the Abyssal Swamp map. Players can trigger this event, which locks down a Point of Interest (POI) surrounded by red bubbles, utilizing a consumable called ‘HEC’ to safely enter the area for 45 seconds. During this time, they must press a switch to activate the event.
Upon activation, participants face three successive waves of enemies, culminating in a boss fight, which grants loot and a keycard. The locked area then relocates, potentially to ‘Algae Pool’, ‘Isolation Zone’, or ‘Comprehensive Facility’, repeating the process up to three times. Each cycle increases in difficulty, requiring players to utilize keycards obtained from previous rounds.
Bungie’s Vision for Future Seasons
In an interview with Ali123, Bungie Game Director Joe Ziegler discussed the studio’s vision for Marathon’s seasonal content:
Each season in Marathon will be a fresh start. We envision each season as a months-long “roguelike adventure.”Players will begin with limited resources and must grow stronger through various means, forging their own unique paths. New content and systems will be integrated each season, fundamentally reshaping the gameplay experience. However, some content will persist at the player account level, such as cosmetic items acquired through unlocking or purchasing.
Release Date and Anticipation
After several delays, Marathon is set to launch on March 5 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S and X. As the release date approaches, anticipation builds to see if Bungie can transform the subdued reception of previous testing phases into a triumphant launch.
