Microsoft to Introduce Rounded Corners in Windows 11 File Explorer and Resolve White Flash Issues in ‘This PC’

Upcoming Enhancements and Fixes for Windows 11’s File Explorer

In the forthcoming update for Windows 11, users can anticipate a subtle yet impactful design refresh for File Explorer. The address and search bars are set to feature rounded corners, mirroring the aesthetic found in the Settings app. Additionally, Microsoft has acknowledged an issue where users experience brief white flashes when initializing ‘This PC’ in dark mode, instead of navigating from ‘Home.’

File Explorer’s Current Limitations

While Windows 11’s File Explorer has made strides, it hasn’t yet achieved the level of excellence that some users desire from a file manager. Numerous inconsistencies plague the interface—most notably, slow loading times in certain sections, prompting Microsoft to implement background preloading as a workaround.

Design Inconsistencies and Upcoming Features

The visual experience is further compromised by inconsistencies within the design, as users encounter light-themed pop-ups while operating under a dark theme. Moreover, several elements do not adhere to the rounded corners standard set by the current operating system.

As highlighted by Phantomofearth on X, these rounded corners for the address and search bar are already visible in preview builds, although they remain disabled by default. The timeline for a broader rollout of this visual upgrade remains unclear.

Addressing the White Flash Issue in File Explorer

In November 2025, Microsoft introduced dark mode for File Explorer dialogs, including essential functions such as copy and delete actions, via the Windows 11 update KB5070311. Unfortunately, this enhancement inadvertently disrupted the functionality of the dark mode for File Explorer.

The company has recognized user grievances regarding intermittent white flashes occurring before files and folders fully load. This issue notably affects various sections including Home, Gallery, and particularly, ‘This PC.’ A subsequent cumulative update mitigated the visibility of these white flashes, but residual effects persist in ‘This PC.’

For users experiencing the default “This PC”setting in File Explorer, the white flashes can still detract from the experience. This persistent issue has been acknowledged publicly for the first time by Microsoft five months after its emergence.

In the release notes for Build 26220.7961, designated for beta users in the Insider Program, Microsoft confirmed the existence of the white flash problem and announced that resolutions are being deployed. The company stated,

“Removed white flash when launching new File Explorer windows or tabs when File Explorer was set to open to This PC. Also removed white flashes when resizing elements of File Explorer.”

Having addressed the white flashes for Insiders, it’s only a matter of time before these fixes reach all users in the production environment.

Enhancing User Experience

Additionally, Microsoft aims to streamline the process of changing themes in Windows 11 directly from Quick Settings, including the option to unpin items for a personalized experience. This is part of a wider initiative to improve the overall functionality and user satisfaction within Windows 11.

As Microsoft works to address these ongoing challenges, the necessity for prompt improvements has never been greater, particularly as public perception of the operating system wanes.
