Launch of GPT 5.1 on Copilot
On November 12, 2025, Microsoft officially launched GPT 5.1, which is now being gradually integrated into Copilot on Windows. This rollout is particularly noteworthy as users can access this advanced version of AI without the necessity of a paid subscription. The free availability of GPT 5.1 on platforms like ChatGPT reinforces this approach, while Copilot provides users with access to the AI’s sophisticated capabilities.
Microsoft has indicated that the availability of GPT 5.1 will be incremental, meaning it may not be accessible to everyone immediately. Users are not required to log out, create new accounts, or update the Copilot app on other devices; this new feature is being implemented on the server side. Currently, it appears that GPT 5.1 can only be seen within the Copilot application.

Despite being a Microsoft 365 subscriber, my access to GPT 5.1 does not seem to be influenced by my subscription status, as it primarily adjusts usage limits rather than providing access to new features.

GPT 5.1 now serves as the default “smart”mode within Copilot. Users also have the option to activate Thinking mode by switching to “Think Deeper, ”a feature generally reserved for users who pay a minimum of $20 on the ChatGPT platform. The full details regarding the extent and efficacy of the Thinking capabilities within Copilot remain somewhat unclear at this time.
Enhancements in Copilot: New Labs Features
The integration of Copilot into Windows 11 marks a significant advancement in native applications, utilizing WinUI 3 for its primary interface elements such as conversation and composition boxes. However, certain functionalities remain inaccessible in the Copilot for Windows 11, though prospects for future updates appear promising.
Microsoft is actively testing Copilot Labs for the desktop application, introducing innovative features such as ‘Vision.’ Plans are in motion to expand Copilot’s capabilities to include 3D models and audio expressions directly within the app. For now, these experimental features redirect users to external sites for access, such as microsoft.copilot.com.
According to Microsoft representatives, “Copilot Labs is now accessible directly from the Windows desktop app! Vision is available in-app, while functionalities requiring browser access—like 3D models, Audio Expressions, and Portraits—will redirect you to their respective websites.”
Looking ahead, the next potential feature under development for Copilot is ‘Actions.’ This functionality will empower Copilot to interact with files stored on local drives, enhancing its utility for users.

Microsoft’s implementation of the Agent Workspace feature allows AI agents like Copilot access to personal files and folders stored locally. The Agent Workspace operates similarly to the Windows Sandbox, providing a secure environment for agent activities, including Copilot Actions.
