Microsoft Confirms “AI Actions” Removal Option from Windows 11 File Explorer Menu

Microsoft has responded to user feedback by allowing the removal of the “AI Actions” feature from the right-click context menu in File Explorer on Windows 11. Previously, the “AI Actions” option appeared in the context menu, even when the feature was disabled. Now, this option can be entirely omitted, enhancing user experience and customization.

Though the concept behind AI Actions may seem intriguing at first, it has drawn criticism for its practicality. To clarify, I’m not dismissive of artificial intelligence; in fact, I find tools like Claude Code invaluable for streamlining my workflow. However, AI Actions appears to be a superfluous addition to Windows, lacking the utility that many of Microsoft’s other AI innovations offer.

For those unaware, enabling AI Actions provides a handful of functions when you right-click on an image. The menu offers options to blur images, remove unwanted elements, conduct visual searches using Bing, and eliminate backgrounds. Initially, this may sound like a meaningful enhancement since it seems to handle “AI processing” directly within the context menu, negating the need to launch separate applications like Photos or Paint. However, a closer look reveals a less appealing reality: selecting any AI Action simply redirects users to those aforementioned applications.

Users can readily achieve the same results by directly choosing options like “Edit in Paint” or tapping into Photos, which already include these functionalities. The question arises: why clutter the context menu with an “AI Actions” entry that merely lists a couple of first-party apps with AI features? Moreover, with the introduction of the upcoming “Ask Copilot” feature—which will function independently by accessing these applications—the necessity for a separate AI Actions option diminishes further.

The current iteration of AI Actions does little to justify its presence in the already busy context menu. Thankfully, Microsoft has indicated that users will soon be able to remove this option in the next update. To do this, navigate to Settings > Apps > Actions, and simply uncheck the relevant applications such as Paint, Photos, Teams, and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Although unchecking these applications still leaves the AI Actions in the menu for now, the submenu remains empty, making it effectively just a space hog. Fortunately, Microsoft is actively working on resolving this issue.

“If there are no available or enabled AI Actions, this section will no longer show in the context menu, ” Microsoft stated in the release notes for Windows 11 Build 26220.7344, which is currently being rolled out to testers.

Streamlining the Context Menu: A Step in the Right Direction

Alongside making AI Actions optional, Microsoft is also exploring a more streamlined context menu. This redesign aims to reduce clutter significantly. For instance, functionalities like “Compress to…” and “Copy as path” are being relocated to a new sub-menu called “Manage File, ” which will also accommodate options for compression formats like TAR, RAR, and ZIP. This reorganization results in a cleaner, more compact context menu.

Additionally, Microsoft has consolidated OneDrive-related options into a singular “OneDrive”section, grouping features such as “Always Keep on this Device” and “Free Up Space” neatly within that category.

These changes may be incremental, but they represent a positive effort by Microsoft to declutter the context menu in Windows 11. The newfound ability to hide unnecessary features like “AI Actions” is particularly welcome.
