Cancellation of Dream Concert 2026 in Hong Kong
On January 29, the Korea Entertainment Producers Association (KEPA) made a significant announcement regarding the much-anticipated Dream Concert 2026. The event, originally set to take place on February 6-7 at the iconic Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong, has been canceled indefinitely.
Featuring Top K-pop Artists
The two-day festival was poised to be a landmark event, showcasing a stellar lineup of well-known K-pop artists such as EXO-CBX members Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin, alongside other popular acts including Taemin, The Boyz, Hwasa, and BamBam.
A Historic Moment in K-pop
This concert would have marked the inaugural international installment of the Dream Concert series and set the stage for a grand world tour scheduled for 2026. The abrupt cancellation arrives just one week prior to the planned dates, leaving fans and participants disappointed.
Underlying Conflicts Behind the Cancellation
The reason for the cancellation is attributed to ongoing disputes between local organizers and KEPA, which holds the rights to the Dream Concert brand. Reports from allkpop indicate that unresolved legal issues related to venue management and reservations have hindered effective planning for the event.
A key point of conflict is centered on the Kai Tak Stadium booking. KEPA claims it fulfilled a formal agreement for the venue, including a deposit, while nCH Entertainment—a partner of South Korea’s public broadcaster MBC—contends that the dates were previously reserved for an overseas special of “Show! Music Core.”In response to these claims, KEPA filed a criminal complaint against nCH Entertainment last November, alleging dissemination of misleading information intended to disrupt the concert’s preparations.
Challenges for Dream Concert Expansion
This cancellation is part of a broader trend regarding the challenges faced by the Dream Concert’s attempts to expand internationally. Previously, in November, the Dream Concert Abu Dhabi was met with backlash due to last-minute changes in the lineup and diminished VIP benefits, as reported by the Korea Herald. Additionally, the concert in Sanya, China, was postponed indefinitely due to regulatory hurdles, while another planned event in Japan was similarly called off, attributed to extreme weather conditions.
Significance for K-pop and Future Prospects
The Hong Kong concert held considerable significance for KEPA, as it was set to be broadcast live across mainland China via Hunan Television—this would have represented the first major K-pop concert aired in China since 2017, a time marked by limited cultural exchanges.
Industry experts are expressing concerns regarding KEPA’s management practices, raising questions about its capability to facilitate large-scale international concerts effectively. As of now, no official comments have been made regarding a potential rescheduling of the event, as highlighted by Reuters.
